No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain-and his entire nefarious empire-out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work… and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find….

I loved this book so much , the world building was brilliant. I’ve always rooted for the underdog and villains of the world . Villains are made not born just because they get stabby. Why can’t they have love too. I adore evie, she is fantastic and the villain man I want is one of my own . I hate to be impatient, but I beg you, don’t make me wait a whole year for book 2 . I desperately need it . I’m dieing to see evie be an epic villain and get him away from the King. I want her to rule them all, and we all know lyssa and the other women are going to help her with her devious plans . Thank you, hannahh, for sharing this fantastic world and people with us all . Now please get book 2 out fast it is much needed

Evie Sage has lost her job after her previous boss the Blacksmith tried to suggest her job involved more than just admin duties. She is desperate for work because she must support her younger sister and her ailing father.

One day she is wandering in the forest when she comes across and young handsome man being chased and attacked by the King’s men. The victim turns out to be none other than the notorious The Villain, although the wanted posters depict him as an old, extremely ugly, man. Despite her initial fear, Evie is desperate enough to agree to work for The Villain as his personal assistant – this girl can put a positive spin on anything!

Once she gets started, Evie finds she really enjoys working for The Villain, even if there is a lot of blood and gore and she has to get used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling! But it soon transpires that there is a spy in their midst, betraying them to the King – can Evie and The Villain expose the traitor?

This was a fun, easy read – imagine Pollyanna assisting an evil (but hot) villain and you can imagine the shenanigans.

I give it four stars because it’s a debut novel for the author and I did enjoy it overall. It had a very promising premise but it didn’t develop into the great book it could have been. Somewhere after the first quarter of the book, I really had to make myself read it. Many of the events/details were unnecessary. At the same time, the world building is minimal. We know there is magic, we know there are magical beasts. That’s all that we know. No rules, no logic. The twist at the end is predictable and I bet it’s her not so dead brother she was talking about a lot during the course of events. It also wasn’t as funny as I expected but it was funny occasionally.
I will still read the sequel and then decide whether or not I should move on to part 3. I believe that the author has a lot of potential and considering it’s her first book, she did great.

The title intrigued me first about this book and then after reading the blurb I put it to the top of my tbr pile.

The Villain is my favourite character he can’t seem to grasp the feeling of love and happiness, he is so used to hurt and pain that he dismisses anything else as a weakness. The Assistant comes across so well, intelligent, funny and definitely engaging. The too and fro between them had me laughing out loud, I mean who would tell their boss, The Villain, a murder they are cute!

I am not particularly drawn to humour in my chosen books but this had me thinking and laughing while enjoying the plot. There is a simmering romance weaving its way through but it doesn’t take your attention away from the story or characters. It seems to be aimed at YA and those that like a cosy mystery.

I will be adding the next book in the series to my tbr pile.

I honestly have no idea how I want to rate this because I’m having a hard time trying to explain how I felt and what I thought about it. I’m teetering on 3.5 rounded up! I started this with more than a little trepidation because some of my favourite reviewers didn’t love it (or even finish it) but others loved it to bits. I’d say I fall in the middle of that scale but I can see why people wouldn’t enjoy it and I can see why people would love it. I’m happy/sad that I liked it enough to want more even when it didn’t blow me away but darn that cliffhanger cos the second book can’t get here soon enough!

From start to finish, this was an entertaining read. It was amusing, witty, and simple, and I honestly didn’t take it very seriously. This book didn’t try to be more than it was, which is a simple story with silly characters and a slightly meandering plot, but that made it all the more enjoyable to me. It was the perfect no thoughts mostly vibes read that I was in the perfect mood for, and I think that that’s key to enjoying this story. You need to just vibe and go with it to see where it takes you!

There are two POVs but the main one is from our FMC, Evie. She’s a glass-half-full bit of sunshine who is also more than a bit of a hot mess! ???? She comes from a family that has been torn apart by death and magic, and she hasn’t had an easy time growing up and had to take on the mantle of adulthood much too young. She’s gullible and clumsy and has a very forgiving and kindhearted nature which makes her easily loved but also easily ridiculed by her peers. I liked Evie! It was fun to see this world from her pov and my heart went out to her and the situations she had to endure out of fear that her community would look down on her when she wasn’t at fault. Her sweet yet mischievous personality was a great complement to The Villain, who wasn’t much of a villain at all! Now, some might feel this counts as a negative towards this book but I loved that he wasn’t as villainous as his reputation makes him out to be! The extremely grumpy, evil, morally grey characters who are at heart generous, loyal, and caring, might be one of my favourite micro-trope thingies. Gimme all of that all the time and The Villain fit the bill! I wished we got more of his POV because I enjoyed seeing him fight the feelings that Evie stirs up in him and which he thought were long dead. There were many elements to his character that I enjoyed discovering but I wanted to learn even more about him! There is a romance subplot and while their secret feelings for each other play a big role in their monologues and some of their actions, I wouldn’t necessarily classify this as a romantasy. It is a fantasy with romance although I hope that changes in the book(s) to come! It is quite the slow-burn though and I hope it doesn’t take much longer for these two idiots to realise just how much they mean to each other in a non-platonic way. ????

As I mentioned earlier, there is also a lot that happens throughout the book and the plot meanders here and there as the author tries to fit in all the things while still having the main plot make sense. This would usually irritate me but I grew to care for the characters and their stories enough that I didn’t mind it! Overall, this was a simple and enjoyable read that I would recommend if you’re looking for a “mostly vibes and fun” book to read.
