A landmark survey of one of architecture’s most controversial yet popular style
The Brutalist aesthetic is enjoying a renaissance – and this book documents Brutalism as never before. In the most wide-ranging investigation ever undertaken into one of architecture’s most powerful movements, more than 850 Brutalist buildings – existing and demolished, classic and contemporary – are organized geographically into nine continental regions.
Much-loved masterpieces in the UK and USA sit alongside lesser-known examples in Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond – 102 countries in all, proving that Brutalism was, and continues to be, a truly international architectural phenomenon.
Includes twentieth-century masters such as Marcel Breuer, Lina Bo Bardi, Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, Ernö Goldfinger, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, and Paul Rudolph. Contemporary architects featured include Alvaro Siza, Coop Himmelb(l)au, David Chipperfield, Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, SANAA, OMA, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, and Zaha Hadid.

This is a great book for lovers of concrete architecture. A massive selection of buildings crossing a diverse range of functions is represented, usually with one image and a brief summary. The selection spans the mid c20th to the recent past. The Utopianism of much of the architecture, as well as its drawbacks are clear to see, but it is the diversity of the forms and possible structural solutions to construction that really fascinated me. Recommended.

When this book came out it was slightly bigger and £100. This smaller edition is roughly A4 and therefore a more practical size. It uses the format of an atlas to show every ‘brutalist’ building of note by continent/subcontinent/ country, as well as providing key information about it’s current state and use. The copy is for each building is holistic and informative. Photography is all in black and white, which personally I like- but others might not. Loved this book, absolute must have for anyone interested in Brutalism.

I am no real expert, but I’m surprised that they selected very few buildings from Eastern Europe and Russia, which I thought were the quintessential Brutalist countries, whereas Western Europe and North America have a much larger selection.
Aside from this little disappointment, I found it wonderful and rich in details.

Rusted steel. Sheer drops. Concrete walkways. Racks of rooms stacked above to the sky. Still looks sexy in the sales brochure. Led lights, Netflix, making love, dreams. Free-running by starlight. Leccy scooters. Pungent smell of green and vintage urine. Peoples have scribbled their names everywhere in cheery felt tip – they like the successful utopian buildings so much they have signed them as their own. Someone has made us cartoon paintings on the walls with car spray. This is nice. Can you hear the raps and the gay lady human beatbox?
