Auto Erotica: A grand tour through classic car brochures of the 1960s to 1980s
£19.00£23.70 (-20%)
The first book of its kind – a car book like no other – offering a deeply nostalgic look at beautiful vintage cars through the superb literature, leaflets and pamphlets that sold them to us. Auto Erotica covers the gamut of motoring in Britain during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
These rare ephemeral booklets are full of unusual graphic ideas and concepts. Their fabulous photography, dazzling colour charts, daring typography, strange fold outs and inspiring styles symbolise the automobile aspirations of generations of Britons.
The book is also packed full of era-defining classic cars, from those we love to those you can’t remember. Expect fast Fords, the XJS, the TR8, MGs, minis, Maxis, Renaults, Beemers, VWs, Vivas, Citroens, DeLoreans and a whole lot more – amazing motors from the past and even some from the future – as you’ve never seen them before.

This is another fabulous book from Jonny Trunk and Fuel (appropriate names for such a book!) that I backed on Kickstarter. It’s not your standard photo book of vintage cars, but high quality scans of car brochures issued for the UK market from the 1960s to 1980s. Ferrari, Mercedes, Porchse, Audi, Hillman, Vauxhall, Rolls-Royce – they’re all here alongside dozens of other manufacturers, some who no longer exist i.e. DeLorean. Featuring hundreds of colour images, it’s a real feast for the eyes that will appeal to car enthusiasts, anyone with an interest in design and advertising or those who just fancy a drive down memory lane. The cars look amazing as do the advertising graphics and images and it takes you back to the days when cars were distinctive and recognisable, unlike the indistinguishable SUVs and hatchbacks that fill the roads nowadays. 240 pages on high quality paper, there is a synopsis for each of the 50+ car manufacturers that feature, alongside a foreword from Bob Stanley and an introduction by Trunk.

As my title says….bit disappointed. But first….
On the upside – It’s a nice thick book, 237 pages.
But on the other hand – It would have benefitted from being A4 in size or bigger. I would have preferred less pictures of many brochures and more pages of individual brochures, highlighting why they were a bit special. Good example would be Genesis of the V12 by Jaguar – not even in this book!. If you’ve got that one, you know what I mean! The text accompanying each manufacturer tells us nothing about the brochures shown, and just gives an overview of the company’s history.
Nice book, nice gift, but could have been so much better.

I backed this myself on kickstarter and have been really enjoying thumbing through the pages of this brilliant book. Like previous fuel/jonny trunk books it’s lovingly put together and a must have for anyone interested in old classic cars. Pages and pages of fantastic brochures, a real feast for the eyes. The foreword introductions are great and really set the mood for enjoying the book. When cars oozed personality, charm and individuality!

A beautifully put together book, with many amazing photos of brochures of cars from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s which brought back many wonderful memories of my yoof. There’s also potted history’s of the various car companies which make it all the more interesting. I backed the making of this book as Jonny Trunk is known for his outstanding books, music licencing and a myriad of other things, so knew this would be a quality release. Buy it if you are into old cars, you won’t be disappointed.
