- Barbara Rae’s sketchbooks bring the frozen plains of the Arctic immediately to life
- Replicates the look and feel of the original sketchbooks
These sketchbooks, the work of the acclaimed Scottish artist Barbara Rae CBE RA during her three journeys towards the Northwest Passage in the depths of the Arctic Circle in 2015, 2016 and 2017, record in colourful and assured brush strokes the icebergs, frozen bays and snowdrifts of this often hostile landscape. Polar bears roam and the Northern Lights dance across its pages, accompanied by Rae’s handwritten notes in which she records her experiences and her immediate reactions to this harsh, unforgiving environment.
Each page of the sketchbooks is meticulously reproduced, and the handsomely bound volume sits comfortably in the hand, making it the perfect gift for anyone interested in painting or exploration.

This is such a lovely account of Barbara Raes trips to the Arctic with the amazing little sketches that really evoke an atmosphere of her travels. I love that it’s been reproduce as it was created during her travels.

I fell for the front cover. Otherwise nothing special. Handwriting difficult to read and of not much interest. All a bit self-indulgent, maybe. Wouldn’t have bought the book had I been able to look inside.

The book quality is good but the vision and powers of invention in response to an extraordinary place are limited. I didn’t enjoy the art I’m afraid.

A fairly small, landscape-format hardback book; as the title states this provides facsimile reproductions of pages from Rae`s sketchbooks which were kept on her trip around Canada’s North West passage and Greenland.
As one would expect they are very much painter’s notes – the kind I would make myself in similar circumstances; they are generally quick compositional sketches capturing a particular image, executed in watercolour with perhaps some pen or pencil.
Knowing the artist’s work, it is evident that some of these will form the basis of larger (sometimes major) paintings so I find it fascinating to look through.
Possibly not a book everyone will appreciate, but any practising artist (student or otherwise) should find this an interesting volume to leaf through.
I like it, anyway.

Brilliant little sketchbook record with how, when & where they were done.

Beautiful sketchbooks, with accompanying notes by the artist, from three visits to the Arctic. Barbara Rae can convey the essence of a scene with a few simple shapes and a restrained use of colour.

This is a beautiful little book filled with wonderful illustrations. The quality of the pictures are outstanding , as a part time artist student the book will be very useful
