Way more than just the bass-ics

Whatever you’re playing―funk, soul, rock, blues, country―the bass is the heart of the band. Bassists provide a crucial part of driving force and funky framework that other members of any and work off. From John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, to “The Pixies’’ Kim Deal, to James Brown’s favored bassist, Jimmy Nolan, bass players have made big names for themselves and commanded respect throughout music history.

In Bass Guitar For Dummies, Patrick Pfeiffer―who coached U2’s Adam Clayton, among others―is your friendly guide to laying down the low end. Starting from the beginning with what bass and accessories to buy, the book shows you everything from how to hold and position your instrument to how to read music and understand chords. You’ll develop your skills step-by-step until you’re confident playing your own solos and fills.

  • Sharpen skills with instructional audio and video
  • Discipline your play with exercises
  • Understand chords, scales, and octaves
  • Care for your instrument

Whether you’re new to the bass or already well into the groove, Bass Guitar For Dummies gives you the thorough balance of theory and practice that distinguishes the titanic Hall of Famer from the just so-so.

P.S. If you think this book seems familiar, you’re probably right. The Dummies team updated the cover and design to give the book a fresh feel, but the content is the same as the previous release of Bass Guitar For Dummies (9781118748800). The book you see here shouldn’t be considered a new or updated product. But if you’re in the mood to learn something new, check out some of our other books. We’re always writing about new topics!

Good book in language which isn’t condescending. You can pick a chapter to read at random

Bought this as I was getting back into playing guitar after playing guitar professionally 40 years ago. Back then I could play really well without knowing an awful lot about the theory of music. This time I thought I’d buy several books to update myself and actually put a name to the scale modes I was playing etc. I’d also like to read music, but that’s for another time.
There is a lot of info in this book. I especially like the chapter on Paul McCartneys bass lines and songwriting styles.
You have access through this book to a large number of mp3 tracks and videos, these being similiar to the kind you would get on Youtube. You need to access these through the internet however. They are not supplied with the book which is a shame.
Being already a bass player I pick up tidbits were I can to improve my knowledge, better late then never, but this book does have most of the answers to the basic theory questions you may have. If I may suggest a follow up book to which I bought at the same time as this. Electric Bass Method Complete by David Overthrow. This book is all of his three bass course books amalgamated into this one book. You save a lot of money buying all three in the one book complete with a cd covering the entire course.

I was looking at several books that might help me in self-teaching bass playing. I ended up settling in this one because it offered some online content, such as tablatures and videos. All other books I was looking at shipped with a CD (honestly that’s a joke nowadays).

Anyway, I was not disappointed, as an absolute beginner the book offered various essential tips to get started. I’m not a fluent player yet, I’m advancing slowly. But I feel that the book will also be useful at later stages when I get more familiar with the mechanics of playing the bass.

I wholeheartedly recommend this, the direction I see for improvement is making more helper content available online.

This book starts with the very basics. There is a good mix of theory and technique. integrated video and audio would help rather than having to visit Dummies website.

First off i’ll start by saying that I am professional guitar and bass teacher. I have taught guitar for over 20 years and find the for dummies books a perfect addon to my lessons, I used to use a different book for bass as I bought a job lot of the guitar for dummies and the complete guide to playing bass from a wholesaler years ago (100 of each) I give them out to my students as a refresher to what we’re learning.

So I ordered this book ahead of starting a new teaching position at a local night school.

So it arrived and all I can say is what a waste of money, first of all it ONLY teaches finger style bass, the paper feels cheap and for me the major issue is that the examples have to be downloaded from their website which is stupid in my opinion. Speaking of the examples, they are not just of the bass but also drums or click tracks and guitar on others, most people would have the ability to seperate the channels to remove the background noises.

send the extra couple of quid and get either the complete bass player or the idiots guide to bass, both are better teaching manuals.

“Bass Guitar for Dummies” is an exceptional bass tutor. Easy to read and presented in a logical manner, it takes the student through the mysteries of the bass guitar step by step and in bite size morsels that are easy to understand. I`m only a few weeks in and have made excellent progress – and it`s been great fun too…..I recommend it to anyone who`s serious about the bass guitar – from beginners to advanced players.
