Be More Japan: The Art of Japanese Living

£6.20

In love with all things Japan or looking to absorb a little Japanese wisdom into your daily life?

From the philosophies of ikigai and wabi sabi to kitsch karaoke nights and futuristic robot restaurants; traditional tea ceremonies and tranquil onsen dwellings to cosplay culture and J-Pop megastars; Japan is full of intriguing contradictions.

Though renowned for its ultramodern capital Tokyo – a sprawling neon-lit metropolis straight from the pages of a science fiction novel – Japan is still deeply rooted in ancient tradition. And while the country runs with clockwork precision, the cultural life of the inhabitants is transformed with the changing of the seasons, a testament to the enduring power of nature’s rhythms.

With each page alive with facts, history and inspiration, Be More Japan unlocks the secrets behind modern Japanese living – whether you’re eating sushi in London or enjoying the cherry blossoms in San Francisco. And if you’re dreaming of a future trip to Japan (or awaiting the 2021 Olympics) this book will get you closer to your destination before you’ve even departed.

Nice volume, good price. Worth the money. Note: this is maybe more for your prospective first time visitor to Japan. It’s not a heavy duty exhaustive job for those that know their kanji from their hiragana. I enjoyed it, anyway.

Bought this as a birthday present as my boyfriend is keen for us to travel to Japan someday. I wasn’t sure if he was going to like it but he absolutely loved it!

The book itself is full of fantastic content, great picture quality and gives a good insight into the Japanese way of living and the history and culture of Japan. I was disappointed to see that the production quality of the book was quite poor. There is a rip in some pages and the trimming of pages is quite poor. The rear of the book was also very dirty and poorly kept. I was very disappointed about this – not very pleased with this I have to say. But the book is a good read.

Not normal size or format of a DK Book. Almost missed it in a box with another item. Hoping my wife will enjoy it.

There’s. a lot to like about this book, but it’s also a little confusing as to what it wants to be, is it a guide to what it is to be Japanese ? Or is it a tourists guide to the islands of Japan ? While I find this guide very interesting and informative I have marked it down slightly simply on its “The art of Japanese living”, don’t get me wrong, what this book does is a very amicable introduction to a plethora of Japanese cultural phenomena and traditions, consider it a primer on Japanese life more than a be all and end all. So am I saying it’s a disappointment. No far from it, this is a very interesting view at the land of the rising sun and if nothing else will set the hooks in you to study further, like all Dorling Kindersley books the photography is stunning and doesn’t come across as too intrusive, but does give you something visual to back up the text. It’s not what you would call a travel guide (there is no mention of the rail systems and general transport, and only broad introductions to the likes of Onsen and Ryokans but there is chapters on seasonal practices and regional topics. It may be marked as a 4 simply because it will make you want to read further but it is very much a 5 * book, oh and the striking graphic cover looks great on your coffee table.

Our holiday was cancelled early on, like so many of us we were saddened – this short book helped us to stay keen on going there, when we finally can go to Japan – when that will be is another question? Stay Safe, here’s to going back… “normal” – then maybe go to Japan – there we go soon???
