The source of tremendous power and the focus of incredible devotion, throughout history notions of beauty have been integral to social life and culture. Each age has had its own standards: a gleaming white brow during the Renaissance, the black eyebrows considered charming in the early eighteenth century, and the thin lips thought desirable by Victorians. Beauty has ensured good marriages, enabled social mobility and offered fame and notoriety, and has led women – and some men – to remarkable lengths in cultivating it, from the dangerous quantities of lead applied by Elizabeth I, to the women of the 1940s and ’50s, who employed face powder, lipstick and mascara to look their best during the privations of war and austerity, creating a chic appearance to which many still aspire.

Very pretty book, a lot thinner than I expected, but lovely pictures / illustration and interesting text.

For what looks like a small library book which I would normally it is packed with clear useful information! Every single page has beautiful historically correct images and a heaps of detailed descriptions and references to texts from the era the author is describing. I was very pleased with this book as a makeup artist and teacher.
Only downside I had was that I bought it from a separate seller, not directly from amazon and the book itself was not in great condition. The pages were all stuck together where it looks like some fluid has got to it.

An interesting and brief introduction to the history of beauty and cosmetics. I found it useful for research.

Most enjoyable! Straight to the point, would have liked a bit more information but it was a great introduction to make up history.
