SHORTLISTED FOR THE TELEGRAPH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2020 – RUGBY BOOK OF THE YEAR
This is a complete history of the Welsh rugby union team – told by the players themselves.
Based on a combination of painstaking research into the early years of the Wales team to interviews with a vast array of Test match players and coaches from the Second World War to the present day, Ross Harries delves to the very heart of what it means to play for Wales, painting a unique and utterly compelling picture of the game in the only words that can truly do so: the players’ own.
Behind the Dragon lifts the lid on what it is to pull on the famous red shirt – the trials and tribulations behind the scenes, the glory, the drama and the honour on the field, and the heart-warming tales of friendship and humour off it.
Absorbing and illuminating, this is the ultimate history of Welsh rugby – told, definitively, by the men who have been there and done it.

a very good book. Some of the less successful times are glossed over a bit (like Gareth Jenkins ill fated stint) but enjoyable for us rugby anoraks.

These types of books rarely have real insight of what’s going on behind the scenes. This one is different. Brilliant depth of coverage and fabulously honest comments from the biggest stars in the game. An absolute must read for Welsh rugby fans of all ages. 5 stars all day

This book was bought on the back of receiving another publication in the “Behind the Jersey” series, “Behind the Rose” (2021), which this reviewer greatly enjoyed! “Behind the Dragon” was too long at 531 pages and because it tended to concentrate on the professional era of the past 25 years, there was the inevitable sense of repetition. In places, the language became too industrial, with overuse of the “f” word. This reviewer is just old enough (almost 79) to remember the last time Wales defeated the mighty All Blacks in December 1953 and, of course, the brilliant Welsh teams of the 1970s. The professional era has been something of a rollercoaster for the national side, notwithstanding a further four Grand Slams, and there is the distinct impression that these successes have been achieved despite the continued poor form of the regions in European competitions. This book should find a ready market amongst Welsh fans throughout the world, but which may have limited appeal elsewhere.

I am a huge rugby fan and collector of books about this greatest sport of all! If you want a grand overview of all things Welsh rugby, then this is your book! It is heavy, so probably not your bedtime read! :-))
