This book by John Harrington offers examples from an extensive range of situations and opportunities professional photographers will encounter. It is US based and primarily for commercial photographers, but what I found most useful were his articulate explanations for the different business techniques he uses. Those arguments are applicable to a wider range of photographers in different locations. As an american based in europe for 20 years, I perhaps have an easier time understanding his voice. But I have discussed the examples with several friends and they found them interesting as well.

This is a big book with diverse material, and presents effective and thorough discussions of the issues most photographers will encounter, from p.r. to commercial to image licensing. I’ve gone through about half of it so far, and figure it will be useful for some years to come. I recommend it without reservation.

I recommend this book if you want to make your transition from whatever full time job into successful freelance photography business world. Inspirational and motivational material with a lot of to the point information (choosing equipment, business tactics and strategies, planning and negotiating etc.) especially for photographers in the US. Get it, read it and reread from time to time in order to be a successful photographer.

Interesting book, too centered on the US market, but nothing’s perfect. Like it says, it’s more of a collection of good practices for established businesses than a guide for beginner photographers.

This is an excellent book. It is well structured, well written, and is by someone that has done it for real rather than just theorised about it. But it is quite specialised. In the first place it is targetted at the sort of photographer that works on commission for commercial clients. Secondly it is for the American market. If you are primarily a stock photographer, or a fine art photographer (for example) then much of the advice will not be relevant and much of what is will need to be adapted. The USA specific advice on tax, pensions and so on is less of a problem, and with a little research (what is a 401k?) is quite easily adapted to regulations and laws in Europe.

As with the other book from the author this book is of use only if you do business in the US it is of no use elsewhere. The information and practices are specifically US. If you order then be prepared it may not be possible to return it !!!
