My cookbook of the year, easily. Owing to limited shelf space, I am VERY selective when it comes to new cookbooks now, but this one thoroughly deserves its place.
In daring to broach a subject many food writers may shy away from, Alexina Anatole’s book stands out as an original, informative breath of fresh air. Of the many unique recipes I’ve tried so far, the Rarebit Mac & Cheese is an instant comfort classic and the Boozey Prune Chocolate Pots OH MY GOODNESS. Beautiful recipes, words, & photography.

Thank you can’t wait for the follow up books

I really enjoyed watching Alexina on Masterchef and was very excited when she announced she was writing a series of cookery books. I wasn’t sure when the topic of the first book was bitter food as I didn’t think I was a fan…..but how wrong was I. What a fantastic selection of recipes. Every recipe I have tried so far has been so tasty. I love how the book is set up in chapters centred around a particular bitter food – grapefruit, cranberries, coffee, liquorice etc. and also how to amp it up or temper it depending on how bitter you want it.
I can’t wait to continue through these recipes and eagerly await the next book.

I am so excited about this book! The book itself is beautiful, well-written and well-edited. The recipes are interesting and doable, even here in Portugal where ingredients can sometimes be a challenged. I especially love the cocktails and salads, but will be cooking more from this book, as every single recipe is incredible. Highly recommended.

The recipes in this book are extraordinary. Creative. Daring. Sumptuous. While some of the ingredients are surprising, they’re all easily available and combine wonderfully.
Photographed superbly too.

Loving the recipes – already found some favourites that I’ll make again and again, but this book is also a fascinating read for anybody with an interest in food. A delight!

Alexina takes readers on a culinary journey to discover the incredible depth and complexity of bitter foods. Far from one-note, Alexina shows how bitter can enhance other flavors when used properly, leading to dishes that are bold, satisfying, and unexpectedly delicious. I have either a lot of these from cooking it myself and various supper clubs.
In an approachable yet adventurous style, this book offers recipes ranging from small plates to mains, desserts and cocktails, all celebrating bitter as a centerpiece. I am excited to host dinners with menu from this book.
With stunning photography and clear instructions, this cookbook makes bitter addictively tasty! Alexina convincingly shows how bitter can liven up any dish or drink, acting as a stimulating counterpoint to other flavours. Adventurous cooks looking to expand their palates will find “Bitter” an essential and exciting guide to harnessing bitterness.
