The essential starting place for anyone who wants to learn about Black British History. David Olusoga’s thought provoking text charts the forgotten histories of Black people in Britain from Roman times right through to the present day.

From Roman Africans guarding Hadrian’s Wall, to an African trumpeter in the court of Henry the Eighth, Black Georgians fighting for the abolition of slavery, Black soldiers fighting for Britain in the First World War, Windrush and right up today. These are the stories that brought us all together in this country.

When did Africans first come to Britain?

Who are the well-dressed black children in Georgian paintings?

Why did the American Civil War disrupt the Industrial Revolution?

These and many other questions are answered in this essential introduction to 1800 years of the Black British history.

This children’s edition of the bestseller Black and British: A Forgotten History is beautifully illustrated in full-colour with maps, portrait galleries, timelines, photos and portraits.

I’ve just looked at the pictures so far and found it so engaging. I am waiting for that free afternoon to read with a cuppa. What I’ve viewed so far is brilliant and much needed for younger generations and for those adults who find history in its usual format a challenge. Brilliant.

An excellent read! I first bought this book at the Birmingham black book faire where David Olusoga was speaking. I thought I would get it signed and save it for my grandsons as a gift. (Aged 3 -5). I read it and couldn’t put it down.
I ended up giving it to my 90 year friend as birthday present.
This copy of Black & British is earmarked for my brother for his birthday and I will be replacing the one I bought for my grandsons I just hope I can get it signed.

After reading the bad reviews I looked forward to reading the book.
Love Love Love it … Contrary to the poor reviews I read through the book and a large portion of the information is readily available in many different places of historic significance and institutions throughout the UK.
    David Olusonga does not disappoint.
A clear concise book starting with the Romans and finishing with the Windrush and ensuing scandal to BLM protests.
An absolute Gem to add to any collection of black literature.
About to purchase another copy for my Goddaughter who’s about to enter secondary education.

I bought the book after reading an article about the author. I wasn’t sure but decided to find out for myself. This is a superb book. Well laid out with great illustrations. Nothing in it that could be criticised as being propaganda. It is interesting, informative and contributes to a well- rounded understanding of history. Grandson aged 10 thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am so glad that I bought it.

The knowledge and history in this book is fantastic, and David Olusoga writes amazingly well to connect with his target audience. It’s not patronising, but clear and well explained for younger audiences understanding.

The illustrations and colours are vibrant and really draw the eye to want to read more about what’s happening.

The dimensions of the book are wider than A4 and need a deeper bookshelf, but no child’s bookshelf should be without it.
