Break the Line: Analysis & Method in Attacking Rugby

£16.10

Rick Ferrara joins Phil Sharpe, Head Coach of Holt RFC in London’s Eastern Division, for the Second Edition of the popular Break the Line tactics manual, featuring rich commentary on each tactic, a new drills section, and QR code links to videos that show each tactic in action.

Break the Line is a primer for coaches and players who want to understand the concepts behind attacking in rugby at a developmental level and beyond. It examines how, from very basic ideas, a player or coach can develop more complex attacks in the open field. The diagrams are designed specifically for this book. They are clear, intuitive, and meant to convey the speed and angles at which attackers and their support should move in order to win in tactical situations.

By being so ultra-focused, Break the Line is an excellent guide, particularly for those who wish to gain an advantage in understanding what makes for sharp, efficient, and winning offense. Inside you’ll find simple and complex open-field tactics, analysis, tricks to winning situations, “spoilers” that ruin offensive attacks, drills for honing certain skills, and tips for real-world application of the techniques.

As an avid reader of rugby coaching books, I often find myself disappointed that the authors lack the real experience of trying to get the message across or needing to engage the players in the outcomes. This book is very different, and this latest Edition with the additional comments and observations from the excellent Phil Sharpe takes it up another level.
The content is easy to absorb without it being patronising, and for me it contained a number of very practical suggestions and observations that I can directly translate into my Sunday mornings.
    Thoroughly recommended.

I found myself using terminology from the book whilst coaching the boys during training. I found the book thought-provoking and it made me reflect on parts of play that perhaps previously I would have taken for granted. I think there is always the temptation when you’ve watched somebody coach or read about how you can coach, to copy like-for-like, but Phil’s tips made me think about how I could adapt the principles of the activity and apply this to our own youth rugby team. I would strongly recommend this book to any coach seeking to develop their understanding of youth or men’s rugby.

Bought for my grandson, an enthusiastic play, it seems to have raise his game. The explanations of the different strategies ae good and the QR codes allowing access to videos of the game plays in action is a very useful idea. A sensible price and a good purchase.

The book is a fantastic way to understand basic attacking structure in the game of Rugby Union with open field tactics, detailed diagrams and tips on how to fix faults in attack like drifting.

Handy for beginners coaching and for players who want to also understand the basics of attack shape.

Well written ..my son has his head buried in the book since it arrived. My son liked how it showed the game in play in the book not just words.

I wish I had this book 30 years ago, it certainly would have helped me as a player. I am now a coach and I am constantly looking for input into ways to play the game on the front foot with tempo and control of the space. This book beings alot of these aspects to life by showing you the practical ‘how’ element using diagrams and the ‘why’ element, which is so often missed, by explaining the thoughts occurring in defence and attack. The top tips from Phil have helped me pose different questions to the players to have them fully own the decision points on the field. Well worth buying…

If you have an interest in rugby, coaching rugby or in particular attacking rugby this is the book for you.

It highlights the principals of attacking in rugby and then breaks down some moves and drills that teams can play or practice at training. It really opened my eyes to the different possibilities in attack.

Phil’s tips throughout the book are brilliant and give an extra layer of understanding to the plays and drills described.

I really liked the QR codes which bring you to clips of matches where these attacking moves are done. This gives reader real life examples.

There is a weakness / play table which is very good for giving attachers examples of what plays can be used against what defense.
