Caravaggio

£11.40

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) was always a name to be reckoned with. Notorious bad boy of the Italian Baroque, the artist was at once celebrated and controversial, violent in temper, precise in technique, a creative master, and a man on the run.

Though famed for his dramatic use of color, light, and shadow, it was above all Caravaggio’s boundary-breaking naturalism which scorched his name into the annals of art history. From the dirtied soles of feet to the sexualized languor of bare flesh, the artist allowed even sacred and biblical scenes to unfold with a startling, often visceral humanity. This vivid pictorial world was accompanied by an equally intense personal biography, scored by gambling, debts, drunken brawls, and even a murder charge.

This book brings together more than 50 of Caravaggio’s most famous and revolutionary works to explore how and why this artist is now considered the most important painter of the early Baroque period and one of the defining influences of art history, without whom Ribera, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Courbet, and Manet could never have painted the way they did.

get what you pay for…..probably use this version to help me relax on the loo. I will have to save up for a coffee table version…..even then I imagine its well nigh impossible to reproduce the subtle, awesome power lurking in the shadows.

Sometimes you see something that is just to good to be true that you actually ignore it. I very nearly did just that until I noticed this book was a Taschen. I so much wanted the full size Caravaggio Taschen which many people managed to purchase. That book has now disappeared and the small Hand Held version is available ( getting a Bad Rap ) I have to say. Funny though, some people are complaining that the book is too small while others are complaining the the full size version it’s too large and heavy.
However, this book is magnificent and I found very very beautiful.
Because of the astonishing price I relied on your views. So I would like to thank those of you who took the time in writing a review. Although…..I think I would of took a shot and brought it Blind.
The book explodes that pure horror of much of Caravaggio’s work and that creepy feeling of what is about to appear from that dark place behind our subjects. Of all the Artist’s I love and admire no one quite has the effect Caravaggio has. I believe he set out to be very different from any other artist and most certainly lived a life as dark and wild as his work.
However….I am not an art critic and I believe not many of us who purchased this book is going to buy a book on Van Gogh tomorrow, probably I’m wrong. What I do know is I believe this book to be bloody beautiful at an extraordinary price.
Thank you all for writing a review I found them useful.

Another Caravaggio book to add to my collection. The man was a master artist and I never cease to wonder at his skills. This is a Taschen book (quality), 95 pages and measures 21½ x 26½ cm, just under A4 high. There’s duplication between this book and many others but the quality is high and the pictures remarkable.
