A brilliant companion piece to the wonderful series. Highly recommended.

I love “Carry On” films, and this book is the best one on this subject that I have seen. That’s not to run down the other efforts of Robert Ross, nor of the other authors who have painstakingly compiled warts and all accounts of this much loved British institution. It is just that I feel this one contains the right level of information and detail; whilst I very much love the “Carry On” films, I am not devoted enough to want the book about the scenes cut from the final films, or the “A-Z of Evryhting Carry On”. This one covers every film, TV show and Christmas special by means of plot synopsis, anecdotes from those involved and Robert Ross’s own critique. The book is well illustrated throughout. My only ctricisom is that Ross obviously lives and breathes “Carry On”, and thus finds it very difficult to criticise the weaker efforts in the series, even if this would be justifiable. Hence, his account is rather subjective, but this doesn’t spoil what is by and large a thoroughly enjoyable tome about some seriously good films.

My mum had this book for years but lent it to a family member and never got it back. She mentioned it earlier in the year and I figured it’d be the perfect xmas gift. This was my first amazon purchase ever. The look on her face when she realised what it was was a joy to watch. Tears were shed and hugs exchanged. Plus it is a fun read to anyone who has watched the films or is interested in movie production.

I bought this book last May, and assumed I would read it in a couple of days. Boy was I wrong! It is SO full of fascinating information on every Carry On Film, and also including stage shows, there is a wealth of information which cannot be glossed over. Some of the information I already knew, but there are many anecdotes and quotes from actors, the negatives and positives are both highlighted, the unbelievably poor pay made to the cast, and the results of certain folk not getting an expected (and deserved) top-billing. If you have any interest at all in Carry On – do buy this book – you will enjoy it!
