Central Park West: the unmissable debut legal thriller of the year
£7.60
One chance to crack the case. A million ways to lose.
Federal prosecutor Nora Carleton has spent years building a case against a powerful New York mobster. She finally has a star witness whose testimony will lock the defendant away for good.
But the courtroom is an unpredictable place. While the killing of a disgraced former governor appears unconnected to the trial, the fallout from his death means a guilty verdict hangs in the balance.
Desperate to stop the mobster walking free, Nora investigates the darker side of the city to find out how everything connects. The more she uncovers, the deeper the corruption runs. And Nora knows better than most that the truth is a fragile thing – especially in court.
Drawing on James Comey’s thirty years in federal law enforcement, Central Park West is a fast-paced thriller, bursting with tension and authenticity – perfect for fans of John Grisham.

I enjoyed the imformation about the Court Procedures in the USA.
The plot was more slower than other thrillers but the courtroom scenes were very interesting.
The first trial was better and the trial of the Mafia lady was a repetition in some ways.
But a good courtroom novel.

I thought this would be pacy and modern and different.
It proved to be just another bog standard mob story with the team all lovey dovey at the end. Sorry for any spoilers there, but I was disappointed.

Most of the novel is reasonably standard US courtroom drama with the usual theatricals and courtroom twists and turns as the trial progresses. Based in New York It centres on the intense competition between Federal and state courts and their prosecutors.
Its clearly well researched on how evidence is gathered and presented and thus plausible. The main Federal players are fleshed out quite nicely especially Benny the no nonsense “get it sorted” federal investigator. Its immensely readable with a good pace but overall, only an average storyline with few significant twists.

Well written – why do lawyers write so well? To be honest, I’m not so interested in the minutiae of the US legal system but it was as clearly explained as was consistent with making the book readable. And it was very readable. Excellent plot, well delineated characters, suitably byzantine till the end.
Will wait for the next – hopefully there will be another – expecting a good read.

This was a very exciting book to read. It was amazing how all the parts of the puzzle were found and put together in a believable and acceptable way. Great characters and non stop action. Loved the conclusion, a really satisfying ending.

For a first book I think it was really good and hope James carries on writing stories as good or better than this. It was interesting to read how the justice system works in the USA. The characters were interesting and believable. I read it in a couple of days, it was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down.

Good plan with a bit of hammy dialogue but it’s worth coping with.
I just skipped the overdone mum/ mother / daughter fake bits.

Hopefully Mr. Comey was a a better FBI chief than fiction author.
This is thin gruel indeed. All of the characters – bar none – were 2 dimensional constructs, all with ‘add ons’: The protagonist; confusion over her sexuality. The lawyers – for defense & prosecution – straight out of central casting. The various police characters, again, central casting with vanilla demons (bad father, guilt, etc). The murdered Governor NY, brought low by #MeToo behaviour. It read like a book written by a committee, which is basically confirmed in the ‘Acknowledgements’ if you even reach the (unsatisfactory) ending. Airport flight delay book at best.
