‘A portrayal of a young person following their dream in the game, a cracking read’ – Alun Wyn Jones, Wales and the British & Irish Lions
Jimmy Joseph is enjoying a long, hot summer with his friends, counting down the days until he attends his first ever training camp at the Eagles Academy, the youth section of his local pro club. He hopes this is going to be the first major step on his journey to being a professional rugby player … but a heavy tackle in training and cruel behaviour from his nemesis, Mr Kane, leads to Jimmy suffering a complete loss of confidence. How can he ever regain his love of the game – and fulfil his rugby dreams – if he is too afraid to tackle?
In this new rugby adventure for Jimmy and his friends, James Hook and David Brayley examine concussion, tackling, friendship, loyalty and the true bravery that’s needed to overcome your fears.

Having set a very high benchmark for the first book by both these collaborators which clearly was recognised and quite rightfully rewarded as winners of Telegraph Children’s sports book of 2021, in association with the National Literacy Trust… So how were they going to follow that? Could it be in music terms the ‘sophomore slump’ which is an artist’s difficult second album!
Need not to worry at all, this book is ‘belter’ from start to finish because of our investment in the characters outlined in book one, this book continues with Jimmy’s rugby journey which is not always straight or even!
His fear of tackling is the main theme throughout and whilst he overcomes it eventually, Jimmy would have to work hard on it with support from his friends and others who may have suffered previously with a psychological obstacle / block themselves. What I liked most about this issue is the clear explanation of how a tackle should be made as there is an assumption that because you are a talented rugby player you know these things! For me this is an insight into the professional world of rugby but told in such a way that youngsters can see for themselves when watching say Wales play in the Six Nations Championship.
This book has so much going for it in terms of the female role model of Mrs John for Kitty, the relationships between the group of Matt, Manu, Kitty and Jimmy but it also revisits the relationship with his grandparents especially Will his grandfather and his well worn phrase ‘It is what it is’
For fear of rambling on I feel that this surpasses the quality of the first and highly recommend this as a great Christmas read for any sports minded children out there!

This second instalment and the first book are brilliant. So well written for a young player with dreams of putting on that shirt. My 9yr old son couldn’t put it down, he was so excited to receive it after finishing – and loving the first one. Keep going Hooky, more please, you’re an absolute star!
