Ching-He Huang is one of the brightest stars in modern Chinese cooking in the UK. Each week in her new BBC2 series she re-invents the nation’s favourite Chinese dishes, modernising them with fresh, easy to buy ingredients, and offering simple practical tips and techniques. These are brought together in this beautiful book to accompany the series.
Drawing on the experiences of top chefs, her family and friends, growers and producers and celebrity enthusiasts Ching sets out to discover the best Chinese cooking in the UK today, introducing easy-to-make Chinese food to sometimes resistant Brits, and painting a picture of modern Anglo-Chinese life in the UK as she goes.
Chinese Food Made Easy begins with some of the most familiar dishes from a Chinese takeaway menu – Sweet & Sour Prawns, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Chop Suey and Cantonese Vegetable Stir Fry, each with Ching’s special and imaginative twist. Later we explore spicy Szechuan food: Noodles, Dumplings and Dim sum; Seafood; Fast Food ; Desserts and finally Celebratory Food, where Ching presents a complete banquet of dishes to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Ching’s knowledge, charm and enthusiasm shine through as she shares the ‘basic principles’ of Chinese cooking including some of the simple techniques and tips taught by her Grandparents for tasty results. Using ingredients from high-street supermarkets and some imaginative suggestions for alternative ingredients, these classic Chinese dishes are updated, fresh and healthily prepared so that anyone can make and enjoy them.

Book content is very good and some of the recipes look lovely, have still to try them but I’m sure they will be very tasty. Ching-He’s TV programs are very informative on the subject and this just allows us to copy that and create the great food she makes in them. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in this genre and also the very good book that accompanies the series “Exploring China”.

I gave this to my boyfriend as a christmas present as he is interested in Chinese cooking. It contains a great selection of recipes and those he has tried out have been delicious.
A word of warning though- most of the recipes contain Groundnut oil but since I have a peanut allergy we have been forced to amend most of the recipes. I don’t know how this affects the intended taste but the food was still good with vegetable oil!

Ching He-Huang’s “Chinese Food Made Easy” has proved to be an excellent cookbook for cooking Chinese. The straightforward method ensues even those without much skill in cooking can still make delicious meals from the vast array of recipes there are to chose from. The recipes include spring rolls, noodle soups among others. The only downside about the cookbook are the long ingredients lists. I’m sure there are some ingredients which you could deem perhaps unnecessary, however, overall I’ve given the book 5*s thanks to what I’ve mentioned previously in addition to various tips and tricks included to help you as you cook.

There are some delicious recipes in this book and I love the fact that some of them are old family recipes – Ching’s Grandmother’s Chicken Fried Rice is so good! There are stacks of recipes that I can’t wait to use, and like any chinese food, once you have the basic food-stuffs and spices in your cupboard (5-spice powder, light and dark soys, sesame oil for example) you really are good-to-go. The only recipes I probably won’t use are the desserts, but the side dishes sound simple and delicious and I will be using them.
I would happily recommend this particular book, and I would certainly buy another book of Ching’s.

I bought this book having seen the TV series and after reading other reviews on Amazon. The only Chinese cookery book I own is by Ken Hom and I must admit I haven’t cooked much from it – it seems so much easier to buy a ready mixed blend from the supermarket. However, these bought sauces have recently, for me, begun to taste all the same and I wanted to try cooking from scratch.
In that regard, most of Ching’s recipes are a delight, all my Chinese favourites are here and have been pared down to make them easy to cook at home (without monosodium glutamate, colouring, etc.).
The only gripe I have is that some of the ingredients are not easy to find in a small mining town…… a specialist Chinese supermarket is at least 14 miles away from me……. so some noodles, dried ingredients and particular wines and vinegars are probably going to be substituted with plain egg noodles, fresh mushrooms, dry sherry and balsamic! (To be fair, Ching does recommend these as alternatives in some of her recipes).
All in all, I like Ching and her recipes very much and will be cooking from this book more often (sorry Ken).

Bought this book to get some additional inspiration for new recipes. I found the book interesting to flick through however the recipes differed so much from the traditional ones that I reverted to googling the originals. This is now on the book shelf and not used very regularly.

I’ve read this twice, easy recipes nicely laid out, I would prefer more pictures. The condition of the book and the packaging was very good and I would buy from this seller again

I had seen the tv programmes, and she makes it look so easy that I thought I would get the book to recreate some of the delicious looking meals myself. The recipes are good, easy to follow, and the ones we have tried have been wonderful. My only criticism is that the recipes in the book are not exactly the same as the ones she shows on screen, but they are still easy to follow, and make for some delicious meals, much healthier, and much more fun that getting a takeaway!
