So, you’ve decided to learn Chinese. Now what?
One of the toughest languages to learn, it’s never been easy to find reading material in Chinese… However, we’ve created a book that will change all of that.
Language learning isn’t just about lessons or practice – it’s about consistency. You may have found the best teacher in town or the most incredible learning app around, but if you don’t put all of that knowledge to practice, you’ll soon forget everything you’ve obtained. This is why being engaged with interesting reading material can be so essential for somebody wishing to learn a new language.
Therefore, in this book we have compiled 20 easy-to-read, compelling and fun stories that will allow you to expand your vocabulary and give you the tools to improve your grasp of the wonderful Chinese (Mandarin) tongue.
How Chinese Short Stories For Beginners works:
- Each chapter possesses a funny, interesting and/or thought-provoking story based on real-life situations, allowing you to learn a bit more about the Chinese culture.
- Having trouble understanding Chinese characters? No problem – apart from the English translation below each paragraph, we’ve also provided you with the Pinyin romanization of the Chinese language, so that you never have trouble reading Chinese again!
- The summaries follow a synopsis in Chinese and in English of what you just read, both to review the lesson and for you to see if you understood what the tale was about. Use them if you’re having trouble.
- At the end of those summaries, you’ll be provided with a list of the most relevant vocabulary involved in the lesson, as well as slang and sayings that you may not have understood at first glance! Again, Pinyin romanization is included to make things super easy for you!
- Finally, you’ll be provided with a set of tricky questions in Chinese, allowing you the chance to prove that you learned something in the story. Whether it’s true or false, or if you’re doing the single answer questions, don’t worry if you don’t know the answer to any — we will provide them immediately after, but no cheating!
We want you to feel comfortable while learning the tongue; after all, no language should be a barrier for you to travel around the world and expand your social circles!
So look no further! Pick up your copy of Chinese Short Stories for Beginners and level up your Chinese, right now!

Overall, I like this book. It really helps to bridge a gap between flash cards and pieces in another language. However there are some minor details which take it from fully living up to it’s potential such as poor formatting (not great to have the chinese characters in some sections on one page and the pinyin and English overleaf) and the odd typo which really screws things up for learning a new language. So whilst the majority of the book is good and I’d still buy it, I can’t give it a 5* as it does have some issues.

Great resource for learning chinese, I find it slightly challenging but also motivating and pushes me with new vocabulary (I would say I am around hsk2, approaching hsk3 level of that helps)
The stories are interesting and varied, and come with English translations afterwards so you can refer between the two and compare where needed. It also has pinyin included in the book which is necessary and helpful if you’re unfamiliar with some new vocab.
Each story is not too long, so you can read the whole story in one session and then study it. Well set out and clearly organised, and a great tool for learning

I am currently on short story six and have to take things much slower than the intended intermediate audience. (I have HSK 2 for anyone wanting a reference of my current level)
Each story is presented to you in Hanzi, Pinyin, and English translation. The end of each story features a summary of the plot, a vocabulary list, and then some competency questions about what you just finished reading.
I -love- the fact that vocab lists and mini quiz sections are included. For me at my current level its very motivating to come away from the end of a chapter (One chapter is one story) and have a clear “You now understand this” section.
My advice to anyone trying it would be to go slow. Set goals if you feel you need to. But ultimately have fun reading about a range of subject matter.

Not helpful without pictures or illustrations. It’s like a dictionary. Didn’t expect this format.

Certainly not for beginners. But a really good way to study.

I have been doing duolingo everyday for a couple of months and have a basic vovabulary. From the beginning there are a world of new characters (at a guess maybe HSK3?).
The stories are simple and translated well, but I would really benefit from a fourth ‘literal’ translation of the sentence chunks to really dissect the structure of what is being said.
If you are not a confident intermediate, expect to be jumping to google translate often – despite the books description.
Still a good resource, and a challenge.

The concept is good, however the execution is not up to standard. Book formatting is poor, fonts types are jumbled throughout the text (particularly the chinese characters). The translations are not accurately marked, as other reviewers have said. From a quick browse it was also evident that the stories were not very appealing (though this I admit is entirely subjective).
My advice is give this a miss until they correct the in text issues.
