Wasn’t inthralled with this hardly Christmas stories

Not to bad. Did not like all the stories
by I. Shepherd
I have enjoyed reading some of the author’s novels but the best thing about this book is the lovely cover. The stories are mostly ok but none are particularly memorable. Only a few have a Christmas connection which makes the title rather misleading. ‘Four Calling Birds’ that closes the book has absolutely nothing to do with the festive season and leaves a nasty taste in the mouth (readers will know exactly what I mean!).
The publisher should be congratulated for managing to con readers into buying this very average re-hash by dressing it up in tinsel.
I suggest that reviewers giving this a 5 star rating need to widen their reading.

Whether buying for yourself, or for someone else, this is one gift that surely won’t disappoint – 5 Stars
I’ve not read any of the author’s short stories before, but this was perfect for dipping into whenever I had a few minutes to spare. Offering a veritable selection-box of mysteries, there are so many different ‘flavours’ of murder to choose from, and part of the pleasure is never being sure what you might uncover next.
Whether it’s the location, motivation, or how the crime is committed, the variety within these stories is a delight, and one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much is because it presented such a diverse assortment of tales. From Sherlock Holmes to Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, and from centuries past to modern times, each story offered something completely different.
Overall: An excellent collection of murder-themed stories, and a great gift idea for any fan of the genre.

Very enjoyable and a mixture of stories

I must admit that, having heard of Val Mcdermid but never having read any of her books, I expected to like this collection much more than I did. Often I expected a twist to the story that never came, or the denouement was obvious that it felt hardly worth reading it at all. Often I skimmed over parts of the story. It just wasn’t that interesting.
The stories did get better towards the end and I enjoyed ‘The Devil’s Share’ especially. In the end the book was saved for me though by the final story, ‘Four Calling Birds’, because that is a matter of solidarity.
Good for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Enjoyed most of these stories, exciting/interesting reads. Felt a couple came across as a bit rushed but overall has made me want to read more Val McDermid.
