‘What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient…highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate.’ – Cobb, Inception
How has Nolan become this leading director? Is he the new Kubrick? What do audiences get out of his games?
Visually, he offers a steely science-fiction noir with the highlights of big stars and a magician’s flourishes, whether he is tackling Victorian London or the far reaches of outer space. In narrative terms, his films twist and turn, provoking as many questions as they answer.
This book will look to crack open the magic box of Nolan’s twisting universe. As a character, he eludes easy answers. Veteran film author Ian Nathan’s research will lean into deciphering his cryptic pronouncements and motivations alongside the history and making of his films.
Examining both the making of and the inspiration behind his many, many hit films, from The Prestige (2006) to the hugely successful Batman films, through to his mind-bending science fiction works such as Inception (2014) and Tenet (2020). And just released in 2023, Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy as the film’s titular American scientist and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Filled with fascinating insights and illustrated throughout with cinematography from his visually stunning ouvre, this book offers a unique, important and unmissable insight into the mind of this most brilliant of directors.

I’ve watched all of Christopher Nolan’s movies to date – some of them a couple of times – so was looking forward to this book. It’s beautifully presented in a thick slipcase with an understated clean design. Each of Nolan’s films to date are covered inside, with the size of the book working in favour of the many photos.
Most of Nolan’s films are designed in a way to leave a lot open to discussion but they all showcase the director’s style so the book makes a great companion. I’m less keen on some of his films than others (with The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk being the most overrated in my opinion) but the chapters on those were as interesting and informative as the chapters on my favourites.
Nolan is of course still working so it won’t be too long before the book will need updating but for now it’s satisfyingly complete. It’s too big for most of the shelves in my bookcase but with a physical item like this the size makes it more of a pleasure to read and it also looks great for display purposes.

This book is a must-read for any fan of Christopher Nolan and his films. It offers a comprehensive and in-depth study of his life and works, from his early shorts to his latest blockbuster Tenet. The author, Ian Nathan, is an experienced film writer who has interviewed Nolan several times and has access to behind-the-scenes details and insights. He explores Nolan’s themes, influences, techniques and challenges with clarity and enthusiasm. The book is also beautifully illustrated with photos, sketches and storyboards from Nolan’s films. It is a tribute to one of the most acclaimed and innovative filmmakers of our time.

A great book on Christopher Nolan.

This book provides a well-written overview of Christopher Nolan’s work. The review is comprehensive and gives great insights into his works. The structure of the book is well-organised and easy to follow which is why I really enjoyed reading it. I didn’t know much about Christopher Nolan although I have seen a few movies he has made. This book allowed me to understand these movies better and showed me more depth about their production and meaning of them.
I also like that this book has a good balance between text and visuals, it makes reading exciting and enjoyable.
Finally, the book also included some movies I plan to watch in the future so I am happy that I read about them and will be able to watch them having a better understanding of storylines and production.
Overall, this is a really enjoyable book to read.
