Some good tips on setting up as a coach but the drills are not very good, they don’t go through variations and different skill levels
by Howard
This book is aimed at someone who is about to take over a kids’ football/soccer team, who (1) has never played or seen football (2) has never been around children or the parents of children (3) is a newcomer to Planet Earth.
Ok, it is not that bad, and clearly a lot of thought has gone into it. There is some useful guidance. It is not unhelpful, by any means. My quibble with the book is that it is really a book for managers rather than for coaches. There are few drills, and the focus of the book is not on coaching at all. It is not a book that will help you to plan a season of training sessions. It tells you little about how you can try to improve and develop players. If I had browsed through this in a shop, I doubt I would have bought it.

Bought for the other half as he has just started coached our sons junior team. He was pleased with it. Thought it could be a bit more upto date with coloured photos. But seems very informative.

I started coaching with no experience. As with all the “for dummies” books you need to put the effort in and read it, making notes and bookmarks. If you do you will benefit and be able to develop a reliable approach to
Team development
Off pitch management
Training planning
Match day prep and management
I can’t recommend this highly enough.

A good book. Excellent reference for budding youth managers

Great book for a first time coach, even if you are a keen football fan.
