Lots of fun projects with clear and helpful instructions on how to advance further, and funny and attention-grabbing illustrations. Would definitely recommend it.

We love this series. All books are great, as this one too. Maybe better to start with Scratch as it’s more intuitive, and this would be next stage.

As an experienced programmer and teacher, I bought this book in the role of personal tutor to provide some fun projects for a student to reinforce his existing knowledge of Python. This book worked well for both of us, but I was very surprised to open the book and to see this pitched as suitable for someone who has never even downloaded Python IDLE let alone played with it. Clearly the strap-line “Step-by-Step Visual Guide” avoids the inherent problems selling the book as a ‘Learn Python by Doing Something Interesting” Book – which it certainly is as it tries to teach Python from first principles but is actually quite flawed. This (I would imagine) is the source of many of the frustrations articulated in some customer reviews. I can only offer my personal view, and to be fair the authors have done a very good job of presenting the game projects in a well-written and well-designed format that is fun to use. However, as a book designed to motivate beginners to learn Python because they get to make some games in a short space of time, the danger is that it can actually backfire. Now don’t take my review too seriously if you just want to tinker with Python on a wet Sunday afternoon and Python is no more than a curiosity; life’s too short so buy the book and have fun!! BUT: the reality is that learning to program can be hugely frustrating for children if it is not presented, done and reinforced correctly with plenty of practice along the way, AND however hard you try to make Python programming fun, being able to write games such as these without having code to follow in a book requires a very sound and confident knowledge of Python fundamentals, an understanding of why the code is written in a particular way, the data structures used, how they work and why these have been chosen, alternative approaches/choices that could have been used, and how to design a program from scratch. Without a focus on broad foundation knowledge and practice of skills, you are not really learning Python or how to create games – you are just copying some code that also provides some background knowledge of the datatypes and constructs used en route – hence you will have no idea how to find and correct the range of errors you might find in the code you have written that does not work (and what better way to put someone off programming for life than that!!), and more importantly it won’t build a confident foundation in using Python to move onto bigger and better projects because the learning here is minimalist and the book actually excludes some very important Python concepts just because they are not used in the example games provided. So I guess I am saying – have fun with this book if you want to see what’s possible with Python, but I am not convinced that this type of “rapid build, painting by numbers, let’s-get-you-to-program-something-interesting-as-fast-as-possible” approach to learning any type of programming language is a good idea if you (or your intended “kids”) are seriously motivated to learn Python. Instead I would suggest ( for “kids” and adults alike) learning basic Python using a more in-depth guide/book (that doesn’t have to be boring if chosen wisely) to get a broader foundation in Python with lots of practice over a longer period of time than you get from this book, and then using this book to move across to game-related projects afterwards.
