‘A major step in patient education and participation in the management of diverticulitis’ – Professor Frank A. Frizelle
Diverticular disease (DD) is a digestive disorder caused by enflamed diverticula, or pouches, in the colon. A common cause is constipation due to lack of fibre in the diet. Diverticulitis is very common, with about 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the UK and 300,000 in the USA. Symptoms are usually persistent abdominal pain plus disturbed bowel function (constipation or diarrhoea or alternating between the two). Diverticulitis sometimes becomes very severe leading to perforation of the bowel, forming an abscess or rarely peritonitis. This best-selling book looks at the treatment and self-management of DD – while the doctor can help, particularly with antibiotics, much can be done by the individual to minimise the effects of this condition.
Topics include:
The medical treatment of diverticular disease
Probiotics (‘good’ or ‘friendly’ live bacteria and yeasts said to be good for digestive health
The increase of diverticular disease in the population
Effects of diverticular disease

During the past five years I have been hospitalised three times with acute Diverticulitis and after having antibiotic drips and feeds, I have been no wiser as to how I came to be in this position.
In fairness to the Doctors who were in attendance,I was asked if I had any questions, but of course I couldn’t think of any until I was discharged.
This book is wonderful at explaining everything in layman’s terms, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It not only explains the condition in detail, but how to minimise the effects on day to day life.
My Mother also suffered very badly with diverticular and had part of her colon removed, I hope with the help and information that I have gained from this book, that I won’t need surgery.

Good book; useful; reassuring; clearly written by an expert; packed full of good advice; includes a chapter on diet. Well worth having on the shelf not least as insurance in case your condition worsens as there is good practical help and guidance on any next steps if treatment is required.

Although it gave lots of information on how and to whom it could happen and possible future occurrences to some people, it was not what I required I would have preferred information on how to treat this condition as there is so much conflicting information on what to eat or not. All say fiber but not a lot else the only thing I have found useful so far is Peppermint tea and Peppermint oil added
Well written and full of information but not for anyone new to this condition.

This book does have detailed information on diverticulitis but it could easily frighten people with some of its content. There was very little help with dietary issues and certainly did not give any comfort to a sufferer. I was somewhat disappointed in the content. When you are first diagnosed you really need a kinder softer approach to dealing with this problem. you need to read a book that gives you confidence not scaring you into focusing on the darker issues diverticulitis could turn into. For those of you who are suffering a good Nutritionist can give you great advice on your diet and any supplements you may need as in this day and age we are all lacking in vitamins and minerals in our body. The best place for this book is in the bin.

This is an excellent little book which explains fully in an understandable way the condition which I have been newly diagnosed with. It covers everything you may want to know about including diagnosis, tests, treatments, the right diet and psychological and lifestyle aspects of the disease. From knowing nothing about the condition when diagnoses and feeling very anxious about the implications etc., this book has helped dispel a lot of those fears and given me a lifeline of good advice and information for the future.
