Corporate Finance: The Basics is a concise introduction to the inner workings of finance at the company level. It aims to take the fear out of corporate finance and add the fun in, presenting the subject in a way that is simple to grasp and easy to digest. Its aim is to explain – and demystify – the essential ideas of corporate finance, avoiding the heavy use of maths and formulae. The calculations and figures in the book are purely to illustrate fundamental concepts, appealing to readers’ common sense, rather than stretch their ability to do “number-crunching”.
Topics covered include:
- Financial statements through the corporate finance lens
- How to make investment decisions
- Cash versus profit
- Net working capital management
- How to determine the value of a business
Through the use of a subject map, this book explains how the key components of the subject are connected with each other, strengthening the reader’s understanding. This book is the ideal introduction for anyone looking for a short yet scholarly overview of corporate finance.

I was given a book by the University where I am studying my MBA on corporate finance, which was so hard to read, I thought I would fail the subject. That was until I found this book, which said almost the same thing, except in plan English. I was so pleased with it I had to find the author on Linkedin and thank him personally.

This is an incredibly useful guide to understand key corp fin concepts, and as someone with no finance background, i found it clear, concise and beautifully summarised the complete corp fin picture on a page.

Absolutely amazing and concise. Straight to the point, clear and easily understandable. Love this book! It made me love corporate finance which was initially daunting as a subject on my EMBA.

Really great overview of corporate finance and also explains well the overarching principles – I recall learning in a professional qualification about eg EBITDA multiples but not sure we ever covered how/why that factors into business valuations, for example, whereas this text does a really great job of conveying the overarching principles and how everything fits together (rather than just what you need to do to pass an exam). Covers CAPM, WACC, cost of debt (YTM) and gives sufficient detail to understand without getting into higher complexity points eg asset betas/degearing betas. Also fundamentals like working capital and cash > profits etc. Really useful book.
A few really minor errors/points: I think one table fairly early on was £10 out on the maths, but this was quite obvious so not liable to cause real trouble, and when summarising (I believe) two key points in (I think) the debt chapter, the first point began by speaking to what was then the second point – this was a little confusing when making notes chronologically but fine once both points read: just think those could’ve been structured better.

Superb book, which got me through the corporate finance exam in my executive MBA. I expect this book will be one of those that I will refer to during my occupational ventures of a lifetime. I highly recommend it.

If this doesn’t become a best seller…. It will definitely become a Classic of Corporate Finance Teaching. Terence’s mastery of the subject is so evident in the way he distills the subject in very clear way. A must read!
