I received my copy of this book only 2 days ago and I have already devoured it cover to cover and started again! It is brilliant. Full of stunning images and helpful tips for photographers wishing to push themselves to the next level with their food shots. It is most useful for intermediate to advanced photographers who are already comfortable shooting in manual. Kimberley doesn’t hold back and she generously shares huge amounts of information on everything from surfaces and backgrounds to styling and troubleshooting. For those who need
their online fix, she refers the reader to her blog and appropriate downloads.
It feels so right to have a real book in my hands again after so much time spent online in the last 12 months and this beautiful and insightful one is not be missed. Highly recommended.

I am a keen cook but was becoming frustrated with the food that I created not looking as good as I wanted it to. I am also considering making a career out of my love of food and thought learning how to make it look good and share it was a good start.
I decided I wanted to learn how to style and photograph food that makes it look wow. I spent ages looking at food photography books, courses and photographers’ websites and Instagram and finally landed on Kimberly’s. The first thing that stood out for me is how luscious she makes food look, I wanted to eat it all! Her photographs were, for me, a cut above those I’d seen in other books and it was clear that Kimberly was an incredible photographer and stylist herself. I went on to buy the book and I’m so pleased I did.
I was a complete novice, barely even picked up a DSLR before and Kimberly’s book gave me the confidence to get started (I ought to mention that you don’t need a DSLR to take great photographs with Kimberly’s help, a camera phone will do). She divides her book into logical and easy to digest chapters which take you through the steps of food photography, styling, colour theory and props in an accessible yet informative way. You feel guided and supported by Kimberly’s vast knowledge and engaging writing style and yet learn so much at the same time. The text and accompanying photographs make a complex subject much easier to understand and then apply. I’ve taken some photographs of my food that I really like and I can honestly say it is all down to KImberly’s help.
I now have a few books on food photography and styling but this one is hands down the best. I appreciated it so much I went on to do Kimberly’s online photography course and haven’t looked back. For someone starting out like me, or an experienced photographer wanting to hone their skills, I can’t recommend enough.

I’ve been listening to Kimberley for few years now so it’s natural for me to purchase her first book. Always a fan of her work and the book certainly didn’t disappoint. There’s a distinct voice between what she does and everyone else which is what made the book so special. With easy language, engaging visuals this is a must-have book if you are looking to perfect you food styling and photography skills.

This book popped up on my Instagram feed as something I could win. But as I never win anything, I thought I’d support a fellow photographer, and I love books on creative photography for subjects I’m interested in too!

However, the thing that really hooked me was the idea that this book isn’t just another “here’s some of my photos and how I did them”. The idea this book is aimed more at photographers (like me) who know how to use their equipment, but maybe need to realign their creativeness with with technical skills.

I spend most of my time taking food photos with very specific guidelines on what the client wants to see. But this book inspires me to find my own style and approach.

This book has far more detail than just a bunch of technical details about every photo, and without saying “copy this”. If you want to just look at great food photos, you can probably search Pinterest or Instagram. If you want to get your creative juices flowing, rethink your workflow and have some fresh insight or inspiration into your approach to food photography, you should get this book.

I’d love the hardcopy as I think a physical book is better. But I got the eBook for convenience as I travel and move around and like my library with me 🙂

Although this is a nicely produced book I found the content a rather unsatisfying. Like a meal, lacking any real meat.

The author is obviously a competent photographer, with a good eye for a picture, but seems to lack a firm technical understanding of lighting and technique.

Wishy washy ways of describing light as “free-floating particles” shows a limited grasp of the most fundamental principles of photography that made me want to grind my teeth every time they floated into the text.

The insistence on using only “natural light” in preference to artificial light sources probably sits very well with the Vegan and organic hipster bloggers that seem to be the target audience for the written content. However, as a book presenting itself as a creative manual for food photographers, such an approach neglects a diverse and highly controllable range of possibilities.

I have given the book three stars only because the section on styling is useful and the images are OK in fairness, but no more informative than the ones you would find in a good cookbook. The restricted range of food types is a major limitation as well of course.

In general, if you are already a reasonable photographer, you are likely to find this book disappointing. It was certainly not the inspirational sourcebook that I expected after reading some of the reviews here.
