£4.70
London, 1196. At the command of Richard the Lionheart, Sir John de Wolfe has left his beloved West Country for the Palace of Westminster, where he has been appointed Coroner of the Verge. But with the king overseas, embroiled in a costly war against King Philip of France, Sir John is dismayed to discover that the English court is a hotbed of greed, corruption and petty in-fighting.
The murder of one of the palace clerks, stabbed in broad daylight and thrown into the River Thames, leads John to suspect that there’s a conspiracy underway to overthrow King Richard. And with the visit of the dowager Queen Eleanor fast approaching, the new Coroner must risk his life to prove his suspicions are right, root out the traitors within and prevent a national catastrophe.

How did we get to book 13 in this fabulous series? John and Gywn and Thomas are in London and not enjoying being away from home. It’s another excellent story with a great sense of place and time. The reader is there with the, amongst the noise and the smells of the 12th century world. started reading the series back on 2014 and shall read the last book in the next couple of months. As a tour guide in Exeter I often mention Crowner John, recommending the series to visitors who enjoy the city’s history. And I often point out where he lived and worked. I shall miss his company.

Fast paced page turner that casts Crowner John in a different light.
Great twist at the end. Where is the next instalment going to lead?

Really enjoyed the overall story but very disappointed by the abrupt and “by sheer luck” ending. I think our Crowner too often achieves success more by luck than judgement!

…and his discomfort matched my own…a fish out of water. However, as usual, John gets it all sorted with the able help of Thomas and Gwyn. I do enjoy the historical elements of this series.

Bernard Knight is a good author, the stories might be a bit the same but the characters are well written and you have to buy the next book to find out what happens to them. Think this is the second to last in the series and is the only one based in London so you get some new history. It is always interesting to know what life was like at different times and the history is well written in all these books. If you haven’t read any others I suggest you start from the beginning of the series

I enjoyed the books very much, the only thing I noticed was that the character Gwyn the Cornish man’s wife had three different names. Not a problem as I am sorry I have read them all. I miss the characters.

This review is, anad will be, identical for any of this series, thus you will read the same on other titles. This action in no way detracts from the worth in these books. Enjoy..! NJM
Crowner Royal (A Crowner John Mystery)
It would be impertinent in the extreme to comment on the series created by Bernard Knight, other than to compliment the Author on his creation. The complexity of condensing the odd twelve books or so is futile and indeed, pointless as until they have been read, the adoption of them as a worthwhile read, or to rely upon a “review” as a critique is to suppose that this writer absorbs and enjoys exactly what you, the reader, enjoys.
Let it suffice to say that the subtlety, realism, earthiness, and general accuracy as perceived by the Author, contrives in the books as a series, to bring forward characters and personalities so similar to what we have today that his assertions (again quite correctly made) that the language used, would for the those of us today, remain unintelligible, seem improbable. One can, upon reading and becoming familiar with the personalities of the “protagonists,” sit comfortably and thoroughly enjoy a super and highly enjoyable read, either as a stand alone novel, but much better if one has access to the entire series, and then reads it in the correct order.
There can be no doubt that as the series progresses, the whole substance of the writing undergoes a subtle and worthwhile polish as the writer himself becomes more familiar with the characters he has produced. All, I might add, as an additional increase in the sheer enjoyment the reader gets from simply sitting and allowing the words to make whole imaginary scenario’s. I just wish there were many more for me to enjoy.

I needed just a couple more books to finish the series, having been given the box-set. I wanted to see what happened next, having been transported back in time!
