Crushing Low Stakes Poker: The Essential Guide to Dominating Low Stakes Sit ‘n Gos, Volume 1: Strategy

£8.50

Most poker books and training videos on tournaments and Sit ’n Gos are by professional poker players who play at the highest stakes. Whereas you can learn a lot from studying them, they won’t always be as useful to you when you’re mainly playing at the low stakes.

Playing low stakes games against beginning and recreational players requires a whole different strategy and approach than playing high stakes games against the best of the best. The Crushing Low Stakes Poker series is focused specifically on low stakes play and teaches you the proper strategy to consistently crush low stakes Sit ’n Gos.

Volume 1: Strategy

Volume 1 covers all the essential things you need to know in order to become a successful low stakes Sit ’n Go player, including:

  • critical poker concepts such as bankroll management, table selection, expressed and implied odds, and ICM;
  • important elements of pre-flop and post-flop play such as playing tight-cautious, playing speculative hands, value betting, and fast-playing;
  • how to play optimally during all the different stages of a low stakes Sit ’n Go: low blinds, medium blinds, high blinds, push/fold, bubble and heads-up; and
  • an overview of the best and most popular poker tools and sites that can help analyze and improve your game as well as get an edge over your opponents.

Includes Push/Fold Charts and Example Hands

In this book you will find multiple push-fold charts, both for 3 to 6-handed play and Heads-Up play. The charts let you make mathematically correct endgame decisions so you can maximize your winnings in low stakes SnGs. You will find extensive hand examples in the book that illustrate how to apply concepts and ideas in practice.

The book also contains a series of poker training videos. The videos are complementary to the book and explain low stakes strategy by using slide presentations and detailed analyses of example hands. Besides a video series from the author, you will also find training videos from top Sit ‘n Go players Ross “Truck T” Graham, Ben “gamb64” Hayles and Tim “onthestoop” Reisner.

Take Your Game to the Next Level

Through discussion of strategy, extensive hand examples and useful charts you will learn to master low stakes Sit ’n Gos. Whether you are struggling with your game or simply looking to improve your results, Crushing Low Stakes Poker Volume 1 provides you with the tools you need for success.

    This is a reasonable book if you are just getting started, prior knowledge is assumed but how to calculate pot odds, implied odds, outs etc is all in there. However the author’s big idea to set this book apart from the rest, seems to be basically recommending limping in with a lot of speculative hands (suited connectors, j 10 – stuff you might raise with from the cut-off, button or defend the BB with) and trying to see a lot of flops in the early stages.

    Maybe things were different back when the book was published, but on the poker stars S&G’s of today, there is no way you would get away with it (except maybe in the micro, micro stakes – the book purports to be playing tournaments around the $15.00 area). Once you’ve had to show down some garbage after limping, people are just going to raise the hell out of you with stuff like A J, K Q, K J and small pairs. This combined with the fact that if you limp, call a small raise and miss a lot, cheap blinds or not, your stack is going to get depleted.

    The strategy is probably more suited to the mid levels of an MTT (if you mix it up with limping some premiums) but not in shorter low stakes S&G’s – people just don’t have enough time to pay attention to what you are doing and respect it.

    There seems to have been a trend recently in books on sharking low stakes games to make some easy money, I’ve seen several books on the subject and they all seem to assume the same thing – low stakes games are loose and fishy. Yes while you do get some of that, by and large players in your average $7.00 tournament know what they are doing, they play a reasonably sophisticated game and you aren’t going to win with simple tricks, it’s certainly not worth learning a whole different S&G strategy just for the low stakes.

    If I was looking to get my foot in the door playing S&G’s I’d probably favour Moshman’s S&G Strategy – excellent book with all the same information, but recommending a more mainstream playing style – best to get into good practice to start with and learn how to play S&G’s as a whole, with an aim to moving up the stakes.

    I’ve read much worse poker books, and I have read better poker books, but I have not found any glaring faults in this one – yet :p This one might not be ideal for complete beginners, as some prior knowledge is assumed, but if you are conversant in common poker terminology, basic mathematics and are able to understand complex lines of reasoning then you should be good.

    It has given me a few things to think about, and some of the pointers can be applied to cash games so it may even be worth reading if you don’t play that many sit&gos.

    Bottom line: If you know a little about poker and are playing a lot of sit&gos but struggling to break even or get ahead then I recommend this book, you ought to recoup your £5 unless you are really terrible at poker or are playing at too-high buy-ins for your skill level.

    Wasn’t sure if I would get anything from it as have read moshmans brilliant poker book on sit and go’s and have watched loads of video tutorials on poker sites such as drag the bar etc. Hes approach when in the early blind level is completely different he will limp speculative hands from early position such as suited connectors. This strategy can only be applied to low stakes however as you will be 3 bet to much at higher levels to make this play profitable. Also i think he should of mentioned foregoing this strategy and just raise / fold from early position (mostly folding) if you find yourself at an aggressive table. for example sometimes the $7 on stars can get reg infested. so i would recommend either switching styles or dropping down a level to find “calmer waters”.
    I would of given this 4 and a half but cant so gave it 5 rather then four. I was disappointed with the book till i got half way through and then it just got better and better.
    He recommends loads of useful computer programes and blogs etc as well as has Nash charts, and Sage system charts which I haven’t heard of but should be easier to apply then memorizing a nash chart.
    One thing that did annoy me was he would give an example of a hand then say hes decision. And I would be thinking what the hell that’s a terrible decision then he would tell you the Villains extreme hud stats and the play becomes understandable or even obvious. This would be so much better if he gave Villains stats first then gave hes decision, as he is using those stats to reach that decision.
    but all in all worth reading and great value for money.

    I’ve played poker for a long time socially and have always enjoyed watching it on TV but I’ve never really been the type of player that plays above the basic level of thinking i.e. “what is my hand?”.

    It amazes that so many of the worlds top players make the final tables time and time again so I decided to invest a little bit of money and open a new account to play online.

    Mike Turner breaks down the skill set required to play in lower stakes ($10-$12) Sit n Go tournaments and offers some really insightful information and points us toward some really useful tools that we can use to our advantage. He also introduced the concept of ICM during tournaments to me (I’d never heard of it before).

    A lot of the hints and tips in here were a revelation to me, and I now find myself better informed to read other players at the table and finishing in the money more often than not. I am now making plays based on the pot odds being offered to me weighed up against the chances my hand is good.

    My only gripe, and its only slight so it doesn’t impact on my rating is that at times this book feels like a sign posting bible, pointing you here and there for more information (usually at a cost of subscription).

    In short, recommended for the new player.
