I first read this book in paperback form many years ago, and recently re-read in kindle form. This is Cathy Glass at her best. The story of poor Jodie is truly the stuff of nightmares, totally unimaginable what this child suffered at the hands of her parents, and truly heart breaking how it left her. Cathy showed endless patience and a real love for an almost unlovable child (at first), and to be doing it on her own as a single woman whilst raising her own kids, I just don’t know how she does it.

I was recommended this book as I assess potential foster carers. For that purpose I think it’s a good book that captures the essence of what it takes to do that role. I did find the social work bashing a bit hard to stomach and unnecessary in terms of the context

My heart goes out to Jodie. Cathy should be commended for her resilience, courage and compassion in trying so hard to help the girl everyone gave up on and rejected thus far.

My first book by her and reading it again years later just as shocking, enthralling and relevant as ever.

This is the cruel world some children endure and live in and it’s not right. Thank goodness for people like Cathy who take them in and attempt to repair some of the damage but sometimes, as in this case, it can seem irreparable…

This book is truly heartbreaking. I am new to fostering and have been on a number of courses where Cathy Glass’s name has come up. The work Cathy did with the child and how she coped with her behaviour is beyond my comprehension (that is not to say that it is the child’s fault – not at all). What the child has been through is so traumatic. This girl’s parents are evil beyond comprehension. The professionals who try to pick up the pieces and try to “mend” a child like this work tirelessly, and the specialist locations that help children to overcome their traumatic past. It’s a real sad fact that places like these MUST exist, but without them, these children would not get the help they need. I could not put this book down, because I wanted to know what would happen next for Jodie and would she get the help she needed to lead a “normal” and happy life.

I’ve read a few books by this author but not in any particular order so decided to go back to the start and gradually read the rest in the sequence in which they were written. I always engage with the story of the subject child in her books so it will be good to learn more about the life of the author and understand the impact of fostering in a more chronological manner.
339 pages divided into 34 chapters.
Jodie’s story is one of the most shocking that a child can experience and Cathy Glass does an amazing job of communication how Jodie is helped to adapt to a more “normal” life.
CG has a pragmatic approach to her child care which comes across in her writing. This is balanced with a high degree of empathy as the author herself struggles to come to terms with what this little girl had endured.
There is always hope for the children in this book and it is there for Jodie although this time with CG is only the beginning of a very long path.
The author never holds back with her honest approach. She praises professionals where she can and never hesitates to criticise those who she feels are not doing their job.
More importantly than anything this book taught me about the impact of fostering on the care giver and the rest of her family unit. Looking after children always needs commitment but CG gives more of herself than would normally be expected.
Damaged is the title of the book and that an appropriate way to describe Jodie. Everyone wants a happy ending but it is hard to see how that can ever be achieved for this little girl.
CG tries very hard not to judge Jodie’s parents and the way society deals with them but I suspect that everyone reading the book will form their own opinions.
Society’s financial commitment is touched on as part of the story and is an important element. It is an astounding amount of money that has be spent as a direction result of the actions of Jodie’s parents. It’s very hard to come to terms with this but CG does that well, showing that society has to invest in children like this simply because there is no other option. The act of communicating the story of children like Jodie is very important as people need to know about the problems that social services and the criminal justice system are dealing with.
I will never describe Cathy Glass books as enjoyable but they are valuable to read as it is necessary for more people to understand the desperate situations in which others live in order to improve our general empathy, allowing us to pause before making judgements of others.
It is wonderful writing that creates huge empathy from the reader – I look forward to reading more.

I’ve read several of Cathy’s books now and this is the best so far. Also the most distressing. I can’t understand how people can do such terrible things to children or any living creature for that matter. This is the first of cathys books that doesn’t really have a happy ending, although by saying that I’m not giving anything away – read it for yourself, but it’s not for the fainthearted.

Having listened to 3 other of Cathy’s book on Audible I decided to actually buy a paperback version for this one. I completed reading it in two sessions over 2 days. It’s so well written and draws you into the lives of Jodie, Cathy & her family. It’s a book that reveals so much, dealing with the real issues & is so shocking that it takes your breath away. I’m working my way through all of the fostering books that Cathy has written (having also ordered four more in one go as they are Bood you just don’t want to put down). I’m just glad there are so many as the style of writing is so easy to follow. You can imagine the frustrations when the social workers don’t always get it right.

    I definitely recommend this book.

Another amazing book by Cathy glass, and in my opinion the saddest I’ve read yet. Truly beautiful how Cathy and Jodie bonded and how Cathy didn’t give up on her. Also amazing work Cathy on how you spread awareness of the awful things people and children have to go through. The work you do is truly inspiring and beautiful thank you.
