Dance of Thieves: the sensational young adult fantasy from a New York Times bestselling author
£4.70
‘Mary E. Pearson is a fearless storyteller’ Stephanie Garber
A reformed thief and the young leader of an outlaw dynasty lock wits in a battle that may cost them their lives, and their hearts, in a new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Remnant Chronicles.
When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty’s resentment and anger.
At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfil their own secret missions.

This book completely swept me away. The characters and the world are beautifully written, and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

A great book. Mary Pearson has got to be one of my favourite authors at the moment. She really allows you to connect to the characters and feel included in their story. I am now reading the revenant series which takes place in the same kingdoms as dance of thieves and I love the connections between the duology and the tribology. Amazing!

The book itself, the premise, the idea sounded amazing!
And I had high hopes. While I liked the characters, their stories and the general storyline I felt that it fell a little flat.
Never at any point did I really care a lot about the characters. I liked them but, it’s hard to explain, not that much?
I sometimes felt the author spent too much time on lore and for you to have read other books of hers in the same universe (which I only found ont after) that for the first 200 pages I couldn’t imagine what the world looked like.
If I’m honest, I still don’t, I hoped to find images and fan art but no such luck.
And then where a lot of detail was used to explain more the characters kind of…well their backstory felt flat.
For instance, Yes we get kazi being through hardships and unspeakable odds – but…her reactions when she confessed them to jase felt…shallow.
All this time she kept it quiet and when she finally does share it’s done in two pages and …that’s it. All this build of emotion felt anti climactic. The love story which I looked forward to, felt like it was just a day one thing. Enjoyable, yes, but I felt like I wasn’t a hooked. But that’s personal preference.
So while the whole story is def enjoyable – i doubt I’ll be reading it again.
