Danger on the Island (DI Liam O’Reilly mysteries Book 11)

The Island of Guernsey isn’t exactly a favourite destination for adrenaline junkies.
But it does have one thing that attracts a new breed of adventure freaks.

Cliff jumping is taking off on the island, and June appears to be the best time of year for those that way inclined to choose to partake in the sport.

When a young woman is killed after a jump, her death is judged a tragic accident, but when her body is retrieved, and the remains of another corpse is found on the rocks below, the Island Police are brought in.

It’s the last thing Detective Liam O’Reilly feels like. Still feeling the effects of a case that almost broke him, he really doesn’t need this.

But when he drags himself back to where he once was, and starts to understand what he’s dealing with he wakes up enough to realise he’s dealing with something much more dangerous than the cliffs that people are jumping off.

There is someone on the Island who likes to take things to the extreme, and O’Reilly is damned if they’re going to do it on his island.

What readers are saying about Danger on the Island
‘Oh boy! Another instant page turner of a read from the brilliant author that is Stewart Giles. It’s a very clever, well thought out and executed (every pun intended!) plotline. There’s something special when an author gets the reader invested and so liking the characters, that there’s that reader’s dilemma: The one where you want to know what happens but don’t want the book to end as you are enjoying it so much. Brilliant, stunning and every other superlative. Wowsers!’ – Misfits Farm.

‘Danger on the Island by Stewart Giles is book 11 in the DI Liam O’Reilly series. I really enjoy this series, which is set in Guernsey.’ – Maureen.

‘Without giving too much away I found it extraordinarily original on many levels. I have never come across a murder investigation quite like this one. It certainly kept me guessing and will not disappoint.’ – Carol.

Danger on the island by Stewart Giles.
Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly book 11.
When a young woman is killed after a jump, her death is judged a tragic accident, but when her body is retrieved, and the remains of another corpse is found on the rocks below, the Island Police are brought in.
There is someone on the Island who likes to take things to the extreme, and O’Reilly is damned if they’re going to do it on his island.
Omg. Stewart has done it again. A brilliant read. I am glad O’Reilly is OK from the last book. I did have a theory. I was partly right but wrong at the same time. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.

A tragic accident by a thrill seeker leads to the chance discovery of a woman’s body impaled on rocks on the beach and a new murder investigation for DI Liam O’Reilly and his team of DC Katie Owen, DS Will Skinner and DC Andy Stone with help from the very capable PC Kim London. The rocks didn’t kill her and it’s not long before another two bodies are found posed with alarming similarities to the first. With no identifications and something very clever and dangerous at work on the island of Guernsey, where does O’Reilly need to look to unlock the truth in time to prevent more deaths and can he do it all standing on one leg?
Things are going well for O’Reilly and Victoria, both damaged at the moment but determined to heal and have a happy future together. Of course, his freeloading cats are still laughing at him and the friendship his daughter has with the rat faced Andy Stone still infuriates him, but at least he’s able to derive some small satisfaction from occasionally getting one over on the unscrupulous Fred The Ed. In the year or so since O’Reilly’s arrival in Guernsey, the island seems to have become the murder capital of Europe and this one is a complex case that really tests them all as they struggle to make connections between the crimes and unknown victims. O’Reilly and the entire series have become absolute favourites of mine, together with his very likable team and associates. As always, there’s lots of humour and warmth between the characters as they tackle the most horrendous crimes and I am definitely looking forward to many more stories in this series.

I have been a fan of Stewart and his work for a few years now. By no means have I caught up with everything that he has released to date as he writes quicker than I can read. No sooner have I finished one book then he has released another two. I must admit that I have a particular fondness for the series featuring Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly. ‘Danger On The Island’ is the eleventh book in the series and what a book it is too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Danger On The Island’ but more about that in a bit.

As with all of Stewart’s books, the fact that I saw his name on the cover of a book that I knew I hadn’t read yet was enough to grab my attention and draw me in. Once I started reading, I knew that I was reading something special and that I wouldn’t be doing anything other than reading for the next few hours. i found that I just couldn’t put the book down. My copy of the book wasn’t glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. The sudden deaths intrigued me as did the characters involved. I developed my own theory as to how the story and investigation were going to pan out so I had to keep reading to see if I was anywhere near the truth or if I had wandered off in the opposite direction. I was so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Danger On The Island’. I found ‘Danger On The Island’ to be the true definition of an unputdownable and gripping page turner of a read. ‘

‘Danger On The Island’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Stewart Giles. Stewart has an easy going writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact his books often read more like chats between friends rather than reading a book. Stewart certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story and then some. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Stewart’s characters are so vividly and realistically described that they seem just as real as you and I. I love the way in which Stewart makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That’s how I felt anyway.

Overall I did enjoy reading ‘Danger On The Island’ and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers. ‘Danger On The Island’ is a superb addition to a superb series. I will definitely be reading more of Stewart’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

A woman dies while tombstoning on the southern point of the island. Her broken body is found beside a woman impaled on some rocks with a single bullet hole in her forehead.
Danger on the Island is the 11th book to feature DI Liam O’Reilly on Guernsey. There are no spoilers about the crimes in previous books but Liam’s personal and professional relationships have developed over the series. In this book he is struggling physically as he recovers from a serious injury which occured at the end of the last book, Sadness on the Island.
I have no idea why anyone would want to go tombstoning! The opening scene when Donna leaps off the cliff is so vivid and terrifying especially as she is killed. Tombstoning is also illegal so her friends are reluctant to help the police which adds to Liam’s frustration.
As usual, the plot develops at a rapid pace and there are more bodies in quick succession. Liam and his team spot a link between the posing of the bodies but have no idea on the motive or identity of the killers or victims. The investigation is further confused by mention of a cold case disappearance of a teenager.
I am always fully invested in Stewart’s books. The dialogue brings the characters to life, there is always plenty of action, and Liam is just a wonderful lead character.
Danger on the Island is another brilliant addition to this fab series.
