Had my D500 for a few days now and enjoying going through this book to get as much as possible from my new camera. I’ve had a Nikon D7100 for five years before this and was slightly surprised to see Peachpit Press don’t have a book on the D500 – so have given David’s book a go this time. It has a ton of advice and detail and I’m finding it clear and easy to read. I have consulted my Nikon manual in tandem but finding I’m reaching more for this book now. It alerted me to the back focus button approach which I then explored more on YouTube – and now I’m a complete BBF convert!

Purchased item for my husband. He is very happy with this item as it’s very informative and has learnt a great deal about the camera. Highly recommend this book to anyone owning a Nikon D500.

I would have given this 5 stars because the book is excellent, but too much is generic and not fully focussed towards the Nikon D500 specifically. It is an easier read than the cameras handbook for sure and for those new to Photography a brilliant introduction to the camera and photography in general, otherwise I suggest the handbook as more relevant and doesn’t cost anything.

These David Busch guides are very very informative. I have paperback versions for most of my Nikons from D700 through to D4s. Am now waiting for his D5 version. They are a bit pricey but worth 5 Stars. Nikon instruction manuals are too basic.

Would prefer a book half the thickness that covered shooting situations / settings with less basics. It’s trying to cover all bases. Two books ….. one for complete photography novices and one for some DSLR experience (or write it in two halves) would be better. Have read and reread the section on the multiple focus options (programmable points etc) and still don’t understand it. It needs a rewrite to explain this section better with perhaps some relatable examples ….. ended up watching YouTube videos to understand the programmable focussing. However, generally better than the other D500 book available from the same publisher (I bought that one too) which is impossible to read (just a massive, complex manual).

This is a great guide to get you used to the controls and workings on your D500 whether stepping up from one of the other DX models or even if this is your first DSLR. The book is well set out and doesn’t feel like a user manual. David’s tips on how sets his camera up are very insightful and he explains why rather than just telling you what to do. His hints and tips for customising the controls are really good and much more intuitive than the Nikon manual. I am sure even seasoned pro-level users would find something of interest here.
I became the proud owner of the D500 after several years with the D7100/7200 (which I will still use!) and although this uses the ‘pro-level’ control and menu layout the move over was much easier with the help of this book. Indeed I was out and about taking photos in some challenging environments right away and the confidence and help from reading this book allowed me to set the camera up in advance for the different situations (low light shooting, fast action sports and some wildlife). Whether it was the camera or this book, or most likely a combination of both, I was really impressed with the quality of the shots the first couple of times out with the camera.
I will be reading it again now I am used to the camera to improve my knowledge of the settings and controls even further and will be setting up some custom settings of my own based on my initial experience.
I can’t rate this against other user guides but would find it hard to see how they could improve on this.

Another great book which is much more readable than the small book supplied with the camera. I already have Busch’s book on the Nikon D300s which set the standard for me, so I had no hesitation in choosing his Nikon D500 guide. Placed the order in October and had to wait until January for it to be released. Amazon made this perfectly clear, and I was quite happy to wait for it to come along. It was well worth the wait…..and the price had come down since I placed the order. What’s to complain about 🙂

I have had several David Busch books over the years for different Nikon cameras and always found them to be very useful hence why I bought this one. They are so much more informative than the manual that comes with the camera.
