Dead Wood (Cold Case Psychic Book 24)
£4.81
Psychic Tennyson Grimm also plans to take full advantage of this well-deserved downtime, but a visit to the famously haunted Bullock Hotel changes everything. Ten and Everly encounter a spirit desperately searching for her lost baby. When questioned, the woman can’t remember who she is, only that her missing daughter’s name is Madeline.
With the help of a local historian, Ten is able to determine the spirit is Grace Bailey, a southern debutante who’d fallen on hard times, dying in a brothel fire in 1894. When the ghost of Grace’s scoundrel husband appears, he has information that could solve the mystery of the fire and what happened to Madeline over a century ago, but the selfish man isn’t talking.
Who started the fire? Why? More importantly, what happened to baby Madeline?

This installment of this long running series is much more about the families, who are all on holiday together. There is still a ghost mystery to solve but that’s really incidental. So if you like all the insights into how everyone’s relationships are progressing and how the children are growing up, it’ll be for you. The one thing that doesn’t ring true for me is how adult Everly is behaving – at 5! But make your own judgement. It’s still an enjoyable series.

Family, found and otherwise, is one of the most present recurring themes in this author’s Salem-verse series and Dead Wood is no exception. On the back of solving a ghost train mystery Ronan, Tennyson and their big family are invited to enjoy a stay in historic Deadwood…and of course there are more ghostly goings on in the old frontier town. This time the guys (and Everley) have to solve the mystery of the spirit in their hotel restaurant trying to find her missing daughter. It’s a close run thing, but this entertaining story delivers yet another satisfying result as the Ten, Ronan and Everley work the case and uncover the truth. Great settings, wonderful characters and relationships, intriguing stories… these are all the things that keep me coming back for more of this series. Love it! 4.5*
