Deal Through Time

£15.20

The history of Deal has been shaped by its position on the extreme eastern coastline of Kent. Close to France, it was of such significant naval importance that Henry VIII chose to erect a castle here on the concentric circle plan. Revolutionary at the time, it is beautifully preserved today. Barracks were established here from 1861. This corps of the British Army was infamously bombed by the IRA in 1989, and the School of Music departed seven years later. Many literary references to Deal refer to its villainous populace, which was often associated with smuggling. Today, chic cafes, shops and holiday cottages reveal an atmosphere of quiet prosperity. Pepys’ and Cobette’s derogatory terms of ‘pitiful’ and ‘detestable’ are a world away from modern Deal. Instead, as the images collected here show, through time the town has become a hidden gem of idyllic existence.

I was expecting something rich in photographs and history. Seems a bit of a lack luster effort really, not that many photos and lots of text from modern times you can easily get from Wikipedia. Bit disappointed overall.

Bought this as a present for my best friend who lives in Deal. Very good facts and photos are detailed.

Im afraid the author knows little about Deal and it shows in the captions. Pictures also disappointing, the old ones are commonly seen. I wont be keeping it.

Very pretty picture book but not to be relied on for historical fact e.g. p78 – the flood referred to was 1913 not 1915 and the tank was not on its way for transportation to France in WW1. it was placed there after the war as a sort of memorial and removed in 1936!

This book is beautifully laid out and has some lovely photographs. Unfortunately there are a few slight errors in the history and the book is a little small for my liking – I would have hoped it would be at least A4 in size, it is closer to A5. Nevertheless, if you know Deal this is an essential book. Realise that nothing is perfect the go buy it, and love it.
