Lena and her son, Eryk, have been constantly on the run, hunted and feared because of their deadly supernatural abilities. But even when they arrive at a hidden haven for such as themselves, dangers lurk and tough choices have to be made.

Now, I only have read Lives of Saints by Leigh Bardugo so far and have only a vague idea about the Grishaverse, but this didn’t stop me from enjoying this book. It is a prequel to Shadow and Bone and it describes the origins of the Fold. Whilst it is clear that it is based on a short story, it is quite packed with emotions and there’s lovely art to accompany it.

I guess it also counts as a villain origin story, but I was particularly fascinated by the mother’s character – almost more than the Darkling himself. He did seem a bit teenage-angsty in here, which is fair, because he is a teenager in this book. A lot of dubious moral choices are presented in the book, and it makes you wonder what you would do in these situations and where justified defence ends and cruelty begins.

Defo recommended for the Grishaverse fans, as well as those who like a good graphic novel!

The design is so beautiful, I know it does say it is a graphic novel, however after I got a hold of the How the How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories I thought this one would have approximately the same amount of graphics and pictures, but I was shocked in a wonderful way! Every single page is filled with wonderful graphics and pictures, whoever was the designer did an amazing job.

Now to the story itself, I was already a big of a fan of the Darkling, expecting some kind of a backstory to explain the way he is, and this story just made me love him even more. Turned a villain into a character more relatable, a villain you can understand, a villain with a reason. I definitely recommend this book and you won’t get any spoilers about the Shadow and bone series, so you can read it even if you haven’t finished the series.

I adore The Darkling, and any insight into him will be added to my tbr immediately.

This added an element to his character I didn’t know existed from what I’ve read of him so far.

The ending gave me feels. He really did go above and beyond for his kind.

I adored the illustrations, they really added to this short story.

⇢ Quotes I adored: “Fear is a powerful ally, but feed it too often, make it too strong, and it will turn on you.”

“I would burn a thousand villages, sacrifice a thousand lives to keep you safe.”

The Grishaverse is my new obsession so ofc I had to get this one and give it a read. I do enjoy a graphic novel and I loved this one. I enjoyed seeing how the darkling kinda started off and it’s definitely made me feel more sorry for him that I wanted to. A nice little edition to the Grishaverse.

The Grishaverse still has me in a chokehold so obviously I had to buy this one to complete the collection. This is a graphic novel prequel to the shadow and bone series. I already read the short story so I already knew what was going to happen, but I’m a Darkling lover so I didn’t care. I looooved the illustrations, it really adds depth to the story. My poor little Darkling. I will always have a thing for villains????. Ngl this story kind of makes you realise why he did what he did, but then again I simply love red flags so I’ll say anything to help their case lol. Anyway,if you love the Grishaverse or just the Darkling, this is a really cute addition. ????

A beautifully illustrated book, Demon In The Wood shines a light on the Darkling and his mother’s hidden past. A window into the origin of Ravkas greatest villain (or hero depending on what side of the Fold you are on) and a must have for any Grishaverse fan!

This book is beyond stunning. The visuals set the scene of this Darkling origin story. I am not his biggest fan but couldn’t miss out on this, here we follow a young Darkling alongside his mother as they live on the run. In Fjerda, they find a camp of Grisha to seek shelter with but not all goes to plan. The story is enchanting and eerie, exactly what you expect from Leigh. I can’t recommend this enough.
