British Sign Language (B.S.L.) is the visual gestural language of the Deaf community in Britain and is the first or preferred language of over 70,000 people.
This is the first major B.S.L./English Dictionary to be published. It contains over 1,800 photographed sign entries ordered by linguistic principles according to the visual characteristics of the language. Each entry is notated with a description of how to produce the sign. A guide to the meaning(s) of each sign is provided in English.
The dictionary will be of particular interest to hearing and Deaf people (and their tutors) engaged in learning B.S.L. or English as a second language. Whether you want to learn B.S.L or teach it – or just improve your vocabulary – the Dictionary of British Sign Language is the authoritative place to begin.
The Dictionary of British Sign Language was compiled for the British Deaf Association by the Deaf Studies Research Unit at the University of Durham.

Arrived in time frame given. Great book. Having recently passing my level 2, I wished I’d have bought this book sooner. It may take of bit of reading to understand what the symbols mean but this looks to be an impressive book – a mine of information. Level 2 upwards an essential purchase.

Brilliant book and is used I teaching BSL
by Jon Hemsley
As a relatively early learner of BSL (currently working on my Signature level 2 award), I found this dictionary a useful reference point and guide to assist with my course. Though some of the signs may be slightly dated in places, the ‘glossing’ system that is used is very user-friendly and a quick visual-written system. Would recommend to any learner looking to add to their points of reference beyond the various apps and online resources available.

This dictionary is the most useful thing ever! It’s brill.
I am just completing my BSL Level 1, and planning to progress and continue with Level 2 shortly and this book has been invaluable in filling in the vocab that I just can’t absorb in my 1 hour lesson…
It helped me no-end to revise for my exams etc and I know it will be a solid ongoing resource throughout my sign education as it covers EVERYTHING (includng swearing!?!). Would recommend to any adult learning BSL – although it is not particularly portable as it’s about the size of a very large and heavy Yellow Pages!
It’s actually very easy to navigate and gives full descriptions of everything including hand shapes, directional movements, regional and other possible variations and other words that sign means etc.
If you are only doing level 1 and not planning to take your signing further then I would say this is a lot of money for a book you won’t use for long, it’s really a resource for those taking their signing forward indefinitely.

The book is first class just what I need for my course and future levels. Has all the details of how to sign and explanations of hands and body movement.
I bought it as secondhand as Amazon were out of stock, the Company that sold it to me first sent a copy which was below standard but when I contacted them they went out of their way to help. Supplied a another book and paid the postage for the first book to go back.
Well done.
