Disrupted Realism: Paintings for a Distracted World
£34.60£43.70 (-21%)
Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are “”the most distracted society in the history of the world,”” has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists’ impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process. Six sections lay out and analyze common themes: “”Toward Abstraction,”” “”Disrupted Bodies,”” “”Emotions and Identities,”” “”Myths and Visions,”” “”Patterns, Planes, and Formations,”” and “”Between Painting and Photography.”” Interviews with each artist offer additional insight into some of the most incisive and relevant painting being created today.

This is one of the most exciting and inspiring art books I’ve purchased in recent months; Californian art commentator John Seed has coined a name for a whole movement that has been slowly building internationally based on realist painting that represents the visual discombobulation of the modern world.
This is not a school or a particular style; rather it is the response of individual figurative artists to our times – as a painter myself, I find it personally enlightening as it quantifies some of the developments my own work has been taking in recent years and in the work of other artists I’ve known about, both in my own circle and abroad.
The book is very well illustrated with large full-colour plates presenting the work of 38 artists; each artist contributes a short interview about their work and influences.
This is an excellent and highly recommendable volume for anyone interested in current figurative painting; it finally gives a name to developments in serious art that have been ongoing for several decades and are now emerging centre-stage.
Do use the “Look inside” option above, and check out the YouTube videos about the Stanek Gallery exhibition.

This was a gift for an A-level art student that was much enjoyed. It was difficult to source and so I was delighted to find it from Boulevard Books

The key question explored is:
“How has fragmented modern life – the most distracted generation ever – influenced art?”
Work by 38 artists is presented to show how painting reflects the subjectivity and disruption of life in this century.
Personal favourites include: D’Ospina, Louis, Kordic, Monks, Kringen and Opdenbrouw.
Instagram searching reveals many more excellent examples of current artists whose work I hope will be featured in future volumes.
Real craft skills are back (Realism) but disrupted in many interesting ways unique to each individual artist.
Perhaps coinciding with the death of Postmodernism and its (misguided) general rejection of excellence / craft skills.
This is a timely book highlighting a developing movement that is gathering momentum.
Recommended.

Bought this book to explore other ideas for disrupted realism within oil painting to develop my own style a bit more, I have been a fan of Mia Bergeron’s work for a few years, so its good to see other similar artists work. The artists answers to set questions does provide an insight into their inspiration and influences within this genre.

This is one of the most contemporary art books I’ve found and fairly hefty too. Full of examples of artists work and interviews with each. I’m referring to it a lot at the moment as I’m working in a similar way. Can’t recommend it enough.

An informative book on this trend – some good images. Mainly featuring different artists and their work.
