Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: with The Merry Men & Other Stories (Wordsworth Classics)
£3.80
With an Introduction and Notes by Dr Tim Middleton, Head of English Studies, University of Ripon and York.
In seeking to discover his inner self, the brilliant Dr Jekyll discovers a monster. First published to critical acclaim in 1886, this mesmerising thriller is a terrifying study of the duality of man’s nature, and it is the book which established Stevenson’s reputation as a writer.
Also included in this volume is Stevenson’s 1887 collection of short stories, The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables.
The Merry Men is a gripping Highland tale of shipwrecks and madness; Markheim, the sinister study of the mind of a murderer; Thrawn Janet, a spine-chilling tale of demonic possession; Olalla, a study of degeneration and incipient vampirism in the Spanish mountains; Will O’ the Mill, a thought-provoking fable about a mountain inn-keeper; and The Treasure of Franchard, a study of French bourgeois life.

Tried it. Liked it. Wasn’t hard to read and I loved the authors description of things, like a writing I hadn’t read before, was addicting to keep reading.

I haven’t read it yet but it’s next on my list. I have bought several books from wordsmith classics and they do not disappoint you definitely get your money’s worth there are a few scuffs around the book but that doesn’t bother me the pages and book are still intact. I also like that there are several other stories included within the book such as the Merry men and the treasure of franchard.

It’s small and easy to bring around to school, only thing is the paper cover unravels so easily when exposed to slight moisture.
Also good read. I forgot so many details from the book because I forgot to study but I somehow got a grade 8 for English Literature? I don’t know either

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an all time classic in it’s genre. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to get into classic literature, especially if you enjoy books like Frankenstein! It is also quite short, so it is very accessible to those who might not want to tackle a huge behemoth of a book, the language is also quite accessible considering the era in which it was published.
If I were reviewing for the story alone, I would easily give this 5*.
However, the book was delivered in terrible condition. The pages were wrinkled, and water damaged, and the front cover was folded completely in half. So, if you’re someone who is precious about the condition of their books, then I would not recommend ordering your books from Amazon, as it may not arrive in optimal condition.

I thought this would be an extremely interesting book but was so disappointed when I found out that the Dr Jekyll and Dr Hyde story was only 50 pages long and no really interesting descriptive parts at all. Truly disappointed, on the other hand there were more short stories in the book to make it up to 300 page book and they were quite good.

At first I thought there was a lot of hype surrounding the story, considering the age because sometimes people think a story or movie is a classic because it is old, however this is not the case. It is more a novella than a novel but if it was any longer it would be very dragged out. I found it to be very entertaining, it is narrated in different perspectives was told in a clear way, which does not confuse the reader and is helpful to the progression of the story, it is a about one persons struggle of the the duality of man without being political, prejudice or scientific etc. I would recommend it to any kind of reader of whatever genre and it is a story which does not feel dated and it somewhat still resonates even today.
