This is a comprehensive, hands-on guide to learning the basic drawing skills needed to successfully create video game art. “Drawing Basics for Video Game Art” demonstrates how fine art principles like drawing skills, anatomy, values and lighting and colour all apply to the creation of artwork for video games. The book features artwork from such hit video games as “Halo Reach”, “Zelda”, “Super Mario Galaxy 2”, “World of Warcraft”, “Grand Theft Auto”, “Heavy Rain” and “Little Big Planet”. Included are examples of classic to contemporary fine art in order to further show the reader the same basic principles still apply to all art forms and that video game art is very much still art.

The book is put into ‘levels’ so you can work your way through it. I love the many references to my favorite games and how to draw depending on what you want to convey.
For e.g he explains how they move the horizon up or down depending on how you want the viewer to feel, like in Assassins creed they move the horizon high up when you are on ground level to make you feel very vulnerable.
I love this book especially teh section on showing you how to start concept drawing.

Won’t make you a game designer, but it does provide cues into the way emotions and characters can be displayed through the art itself. So I actually recommend this even if you aren’t planning on making games – this is such a great book for novelists, artists, designers of any sort. You get a lot of good content for your buck, it is detailed and presented with intelligence.

This book is a really intuitive introduction in to creative thinking behind art and design in video games. I have really enjoyed the authors take to take example and analyse “classic” paintings and visual art elements and try to impose the same thinking in to the art in current video games. It has personally inspired me to develop my work further. This book would also be very useful for tutors and people teaching digital and game art as reference for students and start ups.

This is a book that takes you through everything from the basics of holding a pencil to anatomy. For me personally there was too much emphasis on anatomy. Don’t get me wrong; it’s very thorough and an incredible book if drawing figures is what you want to focus on. To be honest it’s just not the right book for me personally.

It’s a pretty good book if you’re a beginner, showing you the basics in art and game design. But if you’re looking for something more concise, I think you’ll be better of getting a more specialized book.

I am an art teacher and I bought this book for my nephew, but I think I will need to pick up a second copy for the classroom. It covers all the basic drawing skills required for a pre-university Art and/or Design course touching on tone, colour foreshortening, scale and perspective….except it does so in a manner that is cool for teenagers, a label my age and apearance prohibits me from earning. Great as a teaching aid and for any avid young artists. My nephew loves it!

Really good book, I used it for quotes in my Animation essay for Unniversity. It contains a lot of useful information for character design relating to form and shape, alongside many other useful areas in game development and artwork. The book contains theories and images from mainly games and artists, from varying points in history, that back them up and make them easier to understand. After writing my essay I went back and used the book to aid me with my own character design. Thanks.
