I can only imagine many people didn’t read the book’s blurb and just wanted to believe it was instead a new monster book, but as it reads “Compiling and updating monsters that originally appeared in Volo’s Guide to Monster and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes…” And that is what it is, as a user of physical books I appreciate the need to carry one less book now. It was never meant to be 250 new monsters.
However, this is more than just a compilation, it is a rebalancing and a tweaking of many monsters and races. A lot of high CR monsters are now punching at their intended weight, spellcasters have been streamlined and 30 fantastical player races are compiled and tweaked from all the other books.
Not only are 250 monsters now compiled in one book but they’re also reordered to be truly alphabetical instead of grouped and then sorted. Additionally, the book is a host of amazing new art, seriously the art is getting nicer with every new book that is released.
If you instead want a book of new monsters then no, this book is not for you. If you want a streamlined compilation, rebalanced, reworked single book of everything then yes, this book is for you.

fantastic book, I love all the art and the stats for everything. giving it 4 start because the corners were a little damaged and there was a scratch on the front cover but nothing too noticeable

This book offers a really nice spread of different monster types to use within your campaigns. A nicely varied list of threats to bother your party with!

I think if you don’t already own Volo’s Guide To Monsters & Mordenkainen’s Tome Of Foes this would be a good purchase. If you already own the aforementioned books then I don’t think there is enough here to warrant buying this, unless you really have that sort of urge to complete your D&D collection (like me…).
When this was released I was in two minds about buying this but I was hoping that there was going to be all new artwork for the monster entries; well, I was completely disappointed. There is some, but not enough. A real let down by WOTC & a disservice to their fan base.
The only real bonus for me was the additional race options such as the tortle, genasi etc which I didn’t have as I haven’t bought the adventures that contain them. Cheaper to find the details online than buying this just for those.
I know the monster stats have been reworked but I was happy how they were in the Monster Manual anyway but I’m sure there are a lot of DM’s out there who this new info will work for. I’m kind of on the fence with the ‘upgrade’.
The biggest thing with this compilation is that all the really meaty background source material in VGtM & MToF has been dropped.
In conclusion, not an essential product but useful if you haven’t got the other two publications.
