What is the hardest challenge you’ve faced as a student of the Chinese language?

You can work hard on your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, but being able to communicate naturally isn’t easy.

In fact, the toughest part of learning Chinese is knowing how to speak like a native.

Most textbooks are made to teach you the traditional rules and structures of a language and are great for getting around the grammar and spelling questions you may have.

However, how many of them provide you the tools necessary to have a common conversation with a best friend or someone you’ve just met? Not many at all.

Language learners often complain about this – a lack of material that can help you familiarize yourself with the most common phrases used in everyday conversation and in native surroundings.

For this reason, we at Lingo Mastery have developed Easy Chinese Phrase Book: Over 1500 Common Phrases for Everyday Use and Travel for you, our favorite language-learner, so that you may find the best expressions for common usage in China and communicate with your Chinese friends, colleagues and client without any issue!

In this book:

  • An introduction with a detailed guide on how to pronounce vowels and consonants (as well as their combinations) in the Chinese tongue.
  • A list of over 1,500 common phrases in Chinese, with an accurate translation in English for your understanding.
  • A phonetics pronunciation guide of each and every word in the phrases, included after every translation.
  • Finally, a conclusion to make sure you’ve learned and supply you with a final list of tips.

Your days struggling with natural communication with natives is finally over. Our Easy Chinese Phrase Book is here.

It’s time for you to take your (Simplified) Chinese to the next level.

Lingo Mastery have done it again, this time in Mandarin Chinese! Words in context are so relevant in languages!
The pronunciation is explained with examples of each vowel sound in a word (you are referred to a website for the sounds on the Kindle version), with a look at the four tones. The use of Pin Yin is also explained and used well in the book. All in all, you must read the introduction before you start ploughing into the phrases. Then there are lots of good phrases that can be used in all sorts of situations.
My problem is, as a beginner you have no idea about the structure of the language (word order, or how to recognise a noun, a verb etc) and no idea about the pronunciation of a whole sentence (because of the tones). So a quick look at the sentence structure and some kind of sound support for each sentence (CD or ref to some recording of the sentences) would have been really welcome. Hence my four stars only.

Easy to follow contents. It starts with a reasonable, if terse, intro and jumps straight in with an introduction to pinyin and tones. it would have been nice to have included a small section on Chinese grammar, how to ask a question, for example. There are 27 sections covering different topics, so you can start anywhere you like. Greetings may be a better start point than Colours, for example. The more common sentences are nearer the beginning of the section, so Date night begins with “What is your telephone number?” A very useful section called Conversation tips begins with “Pardon me!” Dui bu qiu also can be translate as ” I am sorry”, a very useful phrase to know. Some of the translations tend to be literal whilst there are more conversational ways of saying the same thing, although the authors are always scrupulously polite. “Man man shuo” is a much more common way of saying “Speak slowly”, in Chinese. It would be very difficult for any beginner to jump in and speak these sentences and be understood, mainly because a change in tone means a change in meaning and you don’t want to call mother a horse. An audio CD would be a real bonus. Overall, a useful phrase book, with some interesting additional sections which others of its ilk lack. I only gave it 4 stars because it could do with a section called 100 favourite words/phrases. This is a good book.

I love this phrase book. As well as having a complete guide to pinyin and pronunciation at the beginning, there are hundreds of useful phrases. The book is divided into neat sections so for example, ‘ordering food’, ‘transportation’, ‘hotel’, ‘business’, ‘date night’ and ‘money and shopping’. There are also many fun sections such as ‘When someone is being rude’ and ‘small talk’ is useful too. This makes it easy to find the right phrases for the occasion. Would love a trip to China and would definitely take this phrase book with me to help me with mandarin conversation.
