it’s claimed that one can access a site where auxiliary materials including quizzes are available. However, on obtaining a pin access code I have been unable to access these materials (a criticism echoed by other reviewers). I have had no response from customer services whom it is difficult to contact. This is unsatisfactory and I will be returning this none-too-impressive book unless this is resolved.

Brilliant for beginners who want to grasp the subject of economics. The books breaks it down into bite size pieces and is incredibly informative. Recommend for anyone who wants to understand their economic climate.

This is a great book, as readable as it is informative, it should appeal to the interested general reader and/or the student/more scholarly reader alike. However, that said, I really would have appreciated this book when I was at university studying the topic of economics from a variety of diferent perspectives, ie social policy, politics, sociology.

The contents is clear and concise, as are the chapters, the contents give a good indication of tone, pace and style of the narrative, which avoids being dull and dry in its delivery. There is a clear index too which permits using the book as a reference guide and finding exactly what you need for citations fast. The book uses bolded text with larger typesets for headings and subheadings, regular readers of the Dummies series will know the popular Dummies Icons “Remember”, “Technical Stuff”, “Tip” and “Warning” which do as the authors say “make this book easier to read and simpler to use”, they appear in the margins and draw the eye throughout the whole of the book. The book also uses bullet points, illustrations (some particularly good graphic work and tables throughout this book).

A lot of economics books, including ones of this kind which aim to be comprehensive and all encompassing somehow, when I read them tend to provoke real skeptical responses. Marx and Engels were wrong about some things but their over all assessment that Economics was less of a science by the day and more of a convenient cover/supporting ideology for powerful special interests rings true. That said, this is one of the much more balanced accounts that I have read. Not simply because it includes a good subsection on Behavioral Economics: Investigating Irrationality. The chapter on Applying The Theories of Microeconomics of which the subsection on Behavioral Economics is a part, in fact, is probably my favourite. It covers Property Rights and Wrongs; Asymmetric Information and Public Goods and Health Economics and Healthcare Finance and it does so well, not perfectly I would say but then entire books have been written on Public Goods and Health Economics and they really are contested areas of theory too.

This Dummies book also has a “The Part of Tens”, which I used to think was a feature of all Dummies books but which I have found out since is not the case. I like these sorts of summary sections, they are similar to some blogs or online news groups. It is the section which I would begin with when reading this book as it is easy to read, interesting and less technical than a lot of the other sections.

I enjoyed “The Ten Seductive Economic Fallacies” the most, it appeals to my skepticism and I dont generally hear economists actually acknowledge any economic theory as fallacious very often, unless it is some sort of dispute between rival theories which. That “The World is Facing Overpopulation” I have read to be a fallacy in another book Factfulness but as a specifically economic fallacy (that economics is a science of scarcity is established earlier on in the book)? That was good to read. “Ten Economic Ideas to Hold Dear” was interesting, many of the main points had been made already and were being reiterated at this stage though. Finally, the “Ten (Or So) Famous Economists” was interesting as a final chapter as the principle theorists and thinkers is often were other economics textbooks begin, it could have been better (for one the bold dismissal of Marx might be ill judged) but it is what it is.

The beyond the book features in this book include a website that you can visit for quizzes for every chapter at no extra cost than the cover price of the book. Which I would guess would make it of greater use to the scholarly or student readership using it as a tutorial text but can be accessed by anyone. It is new book/edition so the links are not expired. Recommended.

Great book….well….for dummies I guess *rolls head in shame* on a serious note, it explains things well in simple English with good examples. Helps grasp concepts on how society and economics are linked in the modern world.
