This book was, for me, a revelation. The authors give a very enlightening view of the real dynamics within a family’s nest, even when all appearances seem to point to something entirely different.
Understanding the complexity of a parent child relationship, particularly when trying to see that within our own lives is, by no means, an easy task, and I think that the authors did a brilliant job in untangling something that has so, so many layers to it.

This book has certainly been an eye opener, not only in helping me navigate through past trauma and making sense of it, but also in coming to an understanding of how we so often tend to normalize behaviors that simply aren’t normal. Seeing behaviors and the true nature of relationships for what they are rather then through highly skewed childhood lenses, is absolutely fundamental in understanding and processing difficult situations which, if not addressed, can simply perpetuate our frustration with our own inability to change.

I truly think that this book should be a must read to anyone trying to better understand his own past history and the way it may have affected (often profoundly) his life. Most importantly, I think that this book should be read by any parent out there.

Having been through years of therapy at different stages of my life nothing quite explained the deep sadness I felt inside, the guilt I experienced and the complex relationships in my family like this book has. Of course I had some ideas but nothing had resonated enough to allow for me to heal.

Reading this, it is apparent that Patricia Love has explored her own experiences, is a great therapist with a wealth of meaningful experience and has great written communication skills. In my wide experience of therapeutic books very few contain anywhere near as much insight, knowledge, sound advice and understanding as is offered here. I wish I had come across it many years ago.

For me, it has been like shining a light into the dark corners of my psyche, the aspects of my personality that confused me, in a practical & simple way. Allowing assimilation of parts of my consciousness that were observed but felt alien to me before.

It has also allowed me to understand the various experiences within my family & assess how that has affected personalities & relationships to the present day.

All in all a very freeing experience that is allowing me to: comprehend the family patterns that have blighted me; develop more balanced relationships with both my siblings and others; finally let go of the residual sadness that has plagued me for many years.

I have never felt more grateful to come across a book & an author.

clear & concise book – does seem to focus on the victim, but some beneficial information as an outsider looking in
