What was it really like to rule and be ruled in the Ancient Roman world?
In her international best-seller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now, she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE).
Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius. Beard asks bigger questions: What power did emperors actually have? Was the Roman palace really so bloodstained?
Emperor of Rome goes directly to the heart of Roman (and our own) fantasies about what it was to be Roman, offering an account of Roman history as it has never been presented before.

A very informative and easy to read book, up to her usual high standards

This is the first book I have read by the Author – and it certainly will not be the last. Her way of explaing not just what happened, but how and why it happened, made the facts more understandable for me. Thank you.

Superb. Please treat yourself to this book, I am quite sure that you’ll be happy that you did. Me? I’m thoroughly delighted that I did. What an investment! Thank you very much indeed Mary Beard, your great knowledge and writing ability is a blessing to lesser literary mortals such as I. May the Gods bless you, and see you well.

I bought this book for my husband and he hasn’t read it yet. Pleased with the prompt delivery although I think it was left propped up on my door so didn’t realise it was there until I looked on my computer

After reading SPQR by Mary Beard i’ve been waiting for this book to be released about a subject I find very interesting. It doesnt disappoint and I would recommend to all.
A review has been left criticising Mary’s calling Julius Caesar an emperor when in fact she refers to him on page 17 as an architect of one man rule and his great nephew Augustus who became the first emperor.

Enjoyably easy to read, not overly academic.

Infuriatingly, there are few pictures in my
kindle download. The descriptions of the plates are there and are very tantalising, but no pics. They may be at the end of the book but that misses the point. I’m feeling very grumpy about it. One star knocked off as a result.
