It has been twenty-seven long years since the last sunrise.

Ever since, vampires have waged war against humanity building their eternal empire even as they tear down our own. Gabriel de León, half man, half monster, and last remaining silversaint – a sworn brother of the holy Silver Order dedicated to defending the realm from the creatures of the night – is all that stands between the world and its end.

Imprisoned by the very monsters he has vowed to destroy Gabriel is forced to tell his story – a story of legendary battles and forbidden love, of faith lost and friendships won, of the War of the Blood and the Forever King and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope:

This has easily become one of my favourite books of all time. I wish I could give more stars! Gritty, well paced and fantastic story. I’ve already pre-ordered the next book!

This is honestly the best book I have read possibly ever. Twists and turns, surprises around every corner as well as the best writing I have ever had the priviledge of reading.
I didn’t want it to end, and cannot wait until the next book comes out to answer so many questions. I know Ill be reading and rereading this book for years to come, I think every fantasy book read next will be compared to the story of Gabe.

Loved every second and could not tell anyone enough to read it!

    Get lost in it!

I was simultaneously gripped by the narrative and wowed by the quality of writing displayed in this magnificent book. I am not a vampire fan but I cannot see how anyone who enjoys reading could fail to enjoy this novel, dark and bleak though much of it is.

I enjoyed The Nevernight Chronicles, it was a familiar theme but with enough distinctiveness that it was memorable (an achievement when you read a lot of fantasy – they easily blur so you forget which series had which character and storyline, even the good ones).

I didn’t seek out this latest from Kristoff, though, I came across Empire of the Vampire on Goodreads when looking specifically for long books – value for money and all that. And I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time a book hooked me so quickly. Yes, it helps if you like the vampire genre. But it’s not laboured and the cliches (and I don’t use that word disparagingly, just to acknowledge that there are certain expectations which are met) form a natural part of the world-building, they don’t define it, meaning it’s accessible even if it’s not your usual bag.

Constantly intriguing, well written, complex and interesting characters and lots of action. Genuine plot twists. Not too formulaic, much like The Nevernight Chronicles. I couldn’t put it down. The only disappointing moment was when I finished it and discovered the next instalment hadn’t been released yet and won’t be for another six months.

Great stuff, looking forward to the next. Fingers crossed Tad Williams gets his last volume out on time so I’ve got something to keep me occupied while I wait!

OK so I don’t care too much for Vampire stories as a rule, but I love Nevernight and its sequels so I decided to give this a go. Jay Kristoff is a great writer, the book was hard to put down, really well written and enjoyable, great story and development for the characters. I’m really happy with it and can’t wait for the sequel

Didn’t know what to expect at the beginning, bit of a slow start but then i was hooked, I didn’t want it to end and the writing is beautiful

I regarded the blurb with some level of weary eye-rolling.

    Vampires? Really?

Yet this ended up being a really riveting read, yes with vampires! Compelling characters (both alive and undead), great action, worldbuilding and so forth. Many plot points surprised me, and the structuring device for this story is fresh, interesting and well used throughout this whole story.

Would highly recommend to any fantasy reader, or anyone looking for a gripping read. The Kindle edition is well produced and formatted. The full page black and white images are interesting and add additional style and context to the story.

Amazing book. Beautiful design and artwork. A hefty book and an absolutely great read. Loved this from start to finish. The pacing, the characters, the world, the story…as an old school Interview with the vampire and Dracula fan this is a great vampire fiction. This book definitely hit the spot, its a story you can immerse yourself into for sure. Its full of emotion, one moment I was laughing the next filled with sadness at what I was reading. Its exciting thrilling and is full of twists and turns throughout. Really looking forward to the second book!

Now, I’d like to also comment on the inadequate packaging and handling during dispatch and delivery. The book arrived bashed and damaged sadly. The dust jacket was scratched and the book itself was badly dented on all corners and the spine. Looked like it had been thrown about and dropped. Flimsy cardboard packaging with no additional protection around it isn’t going to help in anyway. If the damage hadn’t happened during transit then it had been damaged before being put in the box and so where’s quality control there?
Either way, sort it out Amazon!
I requested a replacement, which was sent. The second book was still a little damaged – scuffed corners and such, but better than the first so I kept that copy. Still could have been better though as the packaging was still the same dispite my complaint on the first copy’s damage.
