This stunning new colouring book by Johanna Basford takes readers on a inky quest through an enchanted forest to discover what lies in the castle at its heart. As well as drawings to complete, colour and embellish, there are hidden objects to be found along the way including wild flowers, animals and birds, gems, lanterns, keys and treasure chests. Beginning at the entrance to the forest, the journey progresses through woodland, rocky caves and tree-lined mazes, over streams and a waterfall, across the tree tops, to finally reach the castle. Also hidden throughout the book are nine symbols. Readers must find all the symbols to unlock the castle door at the end of the quest and discover what lies within.

I am pretty new to colouring, and Johanna’s name pops up everywhere, so I thought I would give her books a try. I have a little thin taster thing of hers which I got free with something which which was fine for what it was but it did not prepare me for the this book, which I only paid £5.99 for on Amazon. It comes in a really nice gatefold sleeve, with embossed gold highlights, underneath a very sturdy, thick brown cover with an intricate design. There’s a title and a “this book belongs to” pages, with with a “wrap-around” designs. There’s also a quest to solve as you progress through the book.

The paper is a lovely creamy tone, which I think complements colours so much better than brighter white shades which beside your colours create too stark a contrast. The paper is thick, and has a very nice feel to it, a sheet of paper will be plenty underneath, but I always opt for a thin bit of card. The designs are on both sides of the page, and they’re very good with lots of variety.

There are so many little features and touches that Johanna could get away with not including for the price and I’m sure they’d still sell like hot cakes, however they make so much difference to the overall look and feel of the product. Overall I was blown away by it and I’m not easily impressed as so much you buy these days is disapointing.

A beautiful, high quality product, and also great value for money. A rare thing indeed…

I was excited when I ordered his, but I’m a little underwhelmed, especially after it has such good reviews. The quality of the book is great, the paper is nice and thick. However, I’m so fed up of colouring in leaves and trees!!!!! Appreciate the theme of the book is “Enchanted Forest” but there are SO MANY LEAVES!!!!!! Hoping I can find something which has a bit more variety.
Also to add, it’s difficult to colour some parts as they fold round the seam of the book, so getting a pen in there is a bit tricky, especially for the more intricate pictures.

I absolutely love this book, it’s perfect for me whilst I deal with a mental issue. The pictures are so lovely and detailed, and so calming. I can always find something for the mood I am in. I’ve just ordered another one from the series and am excited for its arrival! I never ever thought I’d be one for adult colouring in, but I’m a total convert…

Firstly I really enjoyed the actual content. Not to ‘junior’ for an ol’ codger like me. The pictures are full of easy & more difficult content. If I have one gripe it’s the quality of the paper. I use gel pens for the most part although I also use pencils… the gel pens have a very slight bleed on occasion & the pencils are just hard work to use in this book… I have had colouring books recently where the paper is much thicker and certainly more white. This book is just too off white for me. A pity the content isn’t printed on a whiter thicker art paper.
