Ercol was founded in 1920 at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire by Italian-born Lucian Ercolani (1888-1976), who came to Britain at the age of 10. Ercol is still going strong todand and the company is still family-owned and run. A gifted designer and an impassioned entrepreneur, Lucian Ercolani was the creative driving force behind Ercol for more than 50 years. The book focuses on the Windsor Range, his supreme creation, a coordinated collection of domestic furniture inspired by the traditional English Windsor Chair. Initally developed towards the end of the Second World War as part of the government’s Utility Scheme, Ercol’s Windsor Contemporary Furniture Family was launced at the Festival of Britain in 1951. A run-away success, it was expanded throughout the 1950s and 60s, encompassing a diverse array of kithcen, dining, living room and bedroom furniture in an appealing and harmonious style. Made from solid wood using a distinctive combination of beech and elm, the Windsor Range married the modern with the vernacular, combining advanced technology with superb craftsmanship. Appealing to a wide audience, including post-war design buffs, collectors, students and anyone interested in interiors, it is lavishly illustrated and attractively designed.

As I’m training in furniture restoration and upholstery it is a great asset to me

An over-size softback which has been beautifully designed, and is a pleasure to scan.
As the owner of quite a few Ercol pieces, several of their historical catalogues, and Lucian Ercolani’s biography, I feel that this is a worthwhile addition to my library.
Only four stars though as the book lacks an index – a pity – and has a glaring misuse of the word”complimentary” (in text describing picture on page 137) when “complementary” was meant.

Long awaited tome on a very British iconic furniture manufacturer. What was once every day and graced many a home has now become ‘ mid 20th century’ collectable . Rediscovered or now just better appreciated in the flat pack world that dominates most domestic furniture these days. A wonderful book about design, skilled workers , appreciative owners and real wood. And , still around having adapted to the 21st Century.

Great book for history of Ercol and identifying items
by Brian Saunders
An interesting account of the Ercol company including copious photographs of the various pieces. Majors on the lighter furniture rather than the dark (old colonial etc) items. Includes listings but far from comprehensive, and does tend to skit around a bit. It is therefore history and not a catalogue. Soft back and well produced if you are interested in historical background of english furniture or companies this is well worth a read.

Lovely book for so who loves ercol

Love this book-I inherited a lot of ercol and it has a lot of sentimental value to me. So it is wonderful to discover this book and learn all about the history of it. I am not into ‘coffee table’ books but will make an exception for this one. Great price. Great service.
