Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Rugby But Were too Afraid to Ask explains the often-baffling laws of modern sport in a light-hearted and easy-to-understand way to the new fan/spectator or the ‘sport widow’. This is a witty, off-the-wall guide to the rules of the modern game, as if written by a very patient but understanding friend. Writer Iain Macintosh explains how rugby works and why is it so popular, and reveals the history of the sport. He guides the novice through the basic rules of the game in a bouncy, easy-to-fathom style, but also explains the fast-changing pace of the modern game that has made it even more compelling. If you’ve ever been terrified by phrases like ‘ruck and maul’, or never quite understood the legalised ‘bundle’ that is a scrum, this book will remove the mystery and explain all you ever needed to know about rugby, but were too afraid to ask.

Brilliant & witty book to help basic understanding of the game. It won’t help you become a ref, but it was perfect for me to appreciate the game from an almost non-existent understanding. Some very good gags thrown in for good measure.

If you’re a footy fan tired of overpaid mercenaries masquerading as players & Rupert Murdock ripping the game from the working man, give this book and the sport of rugby a go.

If you don’t know much, or indeed anything, about the wonderful game that is Rugby Union, then this is for you! Informative, amusing, interesting, full of passion. The only downside is that it needs to be updated to cover the last 6 or 7 years of rugby history, and there could be less mentions of England’s one and only World Cup win. The Aussies have won it several times, as have the Springboks – keep it neutral, please!!

Really pleased with this book as someone who watches a lot of rugby union but not always sure of all the rules etc this book explains everything you need to know very clearly & with a sense of humour to, so I was able to enjoy the World Cup much more now I understand every thing!

    An enjoyable and informative read.
I am a rugby wife and mother, so now can join in the with the comments and criticisms.
Would have liked a bit more detail re the rules, but it’s a good starter book.

I know very little about rugby but my 12 year old son is really enjoying this book. It’s amusing and is teaching him things he hasn’t been told yet. Would buy again as a present for one of his rugby mad friends.

Nothing on laws or refs signals

A great little book you can read in a night which will explain the basics and give you enough technical stuff to get by. It’s all about Rugby Union too, not league, which isn’t explicitly stated on the cover.

If you think yoiu know it all then you either don’t understand rugby, or you’re a referee!
Iain Macintosh does a great job of taking the reader through the fundamnetals in a way that covers more than you need for weekly enjoyment of the greatest sport on earth!

    It’s a real “pick & go!”
