Of all the printmaking books I’ve ever read, this is an absolute stand out. Extremely well written, guiding even an absolute beginner through the stuff they actually need to know. It has really useful and informative photographic demonstrations, too, unlike many books of this type, which seem to mainly show photos of the author’s and other artists’ work, rather than getting down to the nitty gritty. If I want a book showing how lovely others’ work is, then that’s what I’d buy. When I buy an explanatory book, this is what I expect: a full and clear explanation of what to do, why, and how to do it. And in Expressive Printmaking, the author has excelled herself in making printmaking achievable, without lots of expensive kit. I’m not a beginner, but I’ve done some printmaking spasmodically over the years, and each time I pick it up again, I need both the confidence to go on, and a good reminder of how to go about it. I’d be surprised if anybody was disappointed when reading this, but for beginners, or people like me, it’s almost perfect. The only fault I could find is that the word ‘baren’ is printed as ‘barren’ – but I suspect that wretched autocorrect reared its head and ‘corrected’ the word. I’m sure Mary Dalton is annoyed that her extraordinary book has even a minor flaw.

I absolutely love this book. Mary Dalton takes us on a printing adventure that has me buzzing with possibilities – and I’m only on chapter two! For anyone who want to take their relief printmaking further, play with monoprint, and explore lesser known techniques such as Mokulito, you will gain so much from this.

I also appreciate the many examples, (by different printmakers), practical ideas, and follow-along exercises that are not too intrusive to those of us who have a little more experience.

I have to admit the only thing I do not appreciate about the book is the flimsy cover, shame on Crowood Press. When I buy a book in physical form it’s because I want it to last a long time and do not like how easy it is to damage the cover, especially considering how carefully I handle my books. But after spending a bit of time with the book, I must say I’ve completely forgotten about that as the content is so excellent.

Thank you Mary Dalton for bringing this to life.
