A behind-the-scenes look at the extraordinary and meticulous design of graphic objects for film sets
Although graphic props such as invitations, letters, tickets, and packaging are rarely seen close-up by a cinema audience, they are designed in painstaking detail. Dublin-based designer Annie Atkins invites readers into the creative process behind her intricately designed, rigorously researched, and visually stunning graphic props. These objects may be given just a fleeting moment of screen time, but their authenticity is vital and their role is crucial: to nudge both the actors on set and the audience just that much further into the fictional world of the film.

This book is such a joy – to hold, to read, to look, to keep. Annie’s designs are the most exquisite. She, more than any other graphic designer for film that I’m aware of, keeps on exceeding expectations, pushing the bar up high! Ample proof of this can be seen in the book – pages upon pages of sheer wonder to relish on. If only I could make everyone stand and stare at the glorious props and graphics that lie within. I’ve bought 3! Still in awe at the Mendl cake box of Grand Budapest Hotel fame! Looking forward to Vol.2 please!

Who’d expect anything less from Annie Atkins? The book is gorgeous to look at, with some really impressive details (like the 3D pencil shavings on the back cover). Gives a great insight into what it’s like working as a graphic designer on film sets, the level of detail that’s required to help immerse the viewer in the story. Highly recommended.

Wonderful insights that would have been improved with more images from Annie’s work.

I’ve been a huge fan of Annie’s for a while and I’m so happy I finally have this book. There is a good range of content ranging from research to actually making the prop itself. This latter section was especially helpful. While I’m personally a prop maker I think this book would still be interesting to the casual reader. Any fan of her work should get this book.
