Fighting For Your Life: A paramedic’s story
£4.70£8.50 (-45%)
A teenage boy lies on the pavement, bleeding from a stab wound; a distraught mum watches, in mute shock, as her daughter suffers a terrifying fatal asthma attack; a young girl is gang-raped and her stricken boyfriend takes an overdose; a disturbed young man flings himself in front of a speeding train at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Few people can imagine living in a world where such situations are part of everyday life. Yet for veteran paramedic Lysa Walder, these and thousands of other emergency call outs are part of a day’s work: scenes of tragedy, heroism loss and horror – but also stories of triumph and humour.
Lysa has been a paramedic for over twenty years, working for the London Ambulance service – the world’s biggest and busiest free service – for much of that time. Here, she reveals what it’s really like to work in a job that brings paramedic teams face-to-face with death – and destiny – every day.

I absolutely love this book! I am starting Paramedic Science at university next year and was looking for some paramedic related books to read – I came across Lysa’s book and it’s exactly what I was looking for. It gives such an honest and raw insight into every day life as a paramedic on the job, detailing each situation, scenario and circumstance you might come across when you put that uniform on. I feel so excited for the venture i I’ll be taking very soon, and will keep this book with me for life as a reminder of why I started. ❤️

I am wanting to become a paramedic. This book really showcases all of the different aspects of the job. Good and bad. I couldn’t put the book down read it in 2 days. Great book for reading on holiday.

I initially bought this book to read as I thought it would look good on my personal statement when applying for uni as it shows reading around the subject I’m interested in however it’s only been a day and I’m halfway through the book already. I’m not a massive reader and I find it quite hard to sit down and read large chunks of a book, but I have not been able to put this book down. It’s so well written and goes into so much detail it’s given me more of an insight into life as a paramedic, and it’s made me want to pursue my dream of becoming a paramedic, even more

I read this in less then 48hours. I have had this for a little while and @ellamayauthor reminded me it was in my #tbr. This is written beautifully and I needed a reminder what they deal with. I have always admire their work but unfortunately on Saturday evening I had a judgemental paramedic and I took it to heart. I followed the book (made me smile at the end of the book- I got my partner to stand outside, we rang 111 and they called an ambulance, we got meds ready and his belongings. We were too prepared) This reminded me what he dealt with on a daily occurrence and they are human. They have bad days and you don’t know what the last call was and they might thought you were over reacting family member because like this says, they see a lot of time lasters too. Its just what I needed because my experience in the last 6 months with my dad is there are more incredible paramedics out there that saves lifes every day and that are so reassuring and been a god send in normal times without mentioning covid. So thank you and please read this absolutely brilliant account and true reflections. Thank you for the hard work you do. My Co workers has I wear the #nhs badge too.

I bought this book at the beginning of my application process to study paramedic science at university- and what an inspiring read. It is an honest and realistic reflection of what being a paramedic entails. It isn’t all flashing lights and medical emergencies and Lysa is open and honest about her real life experiences. I couldn’t put it down and read it in a couple of days. Definitely worth a read.

Lysa is a fantastic author, I really enjoyed this book and found it very insightful.
Some of the stories are heartbreaking and it really makes you think about what paramedics have to go through on a daily basis.
Huge huuuuuge respect to all paramedics not only for your time but your patience, commitment and compassion.
